As you come up the goat trail from the Annsville circle you pass Fort Smith on your right
just past the kayak/small boat launch on the left.

There BERTHA has sat since, well since I can remember just a hundred or so feet from the guard shack and entrance to the fort (base)

BERTHA is GONE !!!  Someone call homeland security   Or maybe its
those vandals from Furguson who would steal anything because
well just because

Why would someone take a sherman (at least I think its one) tank ?

Scrap value?

To resell. If it's got all the moving parts they are worth a lot of $$$$$.

But how do you get a tank onto a trailer wihtout anyone noticing. It has to take a couple of hours to do???

Joe how long would it take to load quickly?

From the forum you posted they reveal it's been gone for over a year!!!

How often do you ride by there?

If frequently do you need an optician visit?  Cheesy

It would take a specialized trailer to haul one of these away.   Similar to the trailers that transport larger dozers.    Obviously, it's going to need a pretty stout winch.   Wouldn't take but a few minutes to load and secure it but, you won't be hiding it.   I've never seen an enclosed trailer for tanks or tracked vehicles so, it'll be out in the open.    I doubt it was sold for scrap but, I suppose that's always possible.

I think it would be awesome to have one in your front yard. Just for the social value. But you could also hang signs on it like "slow down or you're next".

I'd hang a sign that says: "Don't let your dog crap in my yard, your house is still in range."

If memory serves me right (I did not look at the links) it is an M-48A1.  It was replaced by the M-60 and then the Abrams. The M-60 was a Viet Nam era style but was ineffective for a lot of use as the ground conditions would not allow it to be used much.
The M48 was the first tank I trained on but schooling centered on the M-60.
The Abrams was in testing in Maryland in the middle 60's.  It had a turbine  engine and could spin the tracks on a hard acceleration ,and hit 60 MPH in a quarter mile. It was an all aluminum and in experimental stages.
