Getting ready for the hanukkah bush and I am ending up with a 1/2 straight to much.... hmmmmm

Its a "once around the tree" setup. Always wanted a decent layout for Christmas as a kid, never could afford one. The FIL had a Lionel/MTH shop so I got decent prices on a nice MTH and I have added track for a few years. Little kids love it and I get a kick out of it. The small oval runs a Lionel Thomas the Tank engine and the large one is a PA steamer (MTH). I have a passenger set and a freight set which is the reason for the siding.

Got it!!

When I took it apart, the first curve after the switch was loosened and placed back down with the angle to much to the right. Pulled a screw and all is good.

Looks fun, my 2 boys ( 18 months and 4 years old) love trains. Took them on the polar express a couple weekends ago. You need to post a picture with everything set up.  cooldude

When I was 10 my Dad gave me a big box of trains that he bought from a neighbor. I played with them for a few years and put them away. Thirty years later I happened into a train hobby convention and found that my old ; and some are very old, Lionels are worth tens of thousands of dollars. They are still in a box but now wrapped neatly and with care.

The FIL is like that. He is a collector and has 30-60 year old stuff NIB.

I just put it up at Christmas, not really a rail aficionado  but I get a kick out of watching kids watch the larger train dissapear under the tree with the smoke wound up so much it looks like the tree is on fire with the little Thomas lionel clipping around on the little track.

I started with some used Lionel cheaper stuff when the kids were smaller and then got a MTH PA steam engine with passenger cars. I picked up MTH track, both used and new and the trestle set to do the "once around". Then I had almost enough to build a second small oval left over so I finished that out and put a older Lionel transformer and the Thomas engine or sometimes the older Lionel steamer on it running with the outside train, it looks pretty cool. For something different I picked up some freight that is the same era so I put the siding on to store the cars.

We never had the money to blow on a train when I was growing up. For a lot of years presents were pretty sparse at Christmas. So I get to indulge myself a little a little at a time, though this is as far as it is likely going to go. The layout is 8x6 in the dining room and if it gets any bigger we will have to eat on the porch. The kids are at a point where they are old enough to not to want to show that they like having it, and young enough so that there isn't any nostalga. I still catch them running it once in a while though.  Smiley

I got a basic Lionel set from Santa when I was about eight.  After that, something was added to the set every Christmas.  The Hudson engine is from 1948, the good stuff.  It was probably my primary toy as a child and was more then a little abused.  We still have everything although the engine stopped working years back.  One of my projects is to get it running for my grandchildren and put it up around the Christmas tree.

I had (still have) a train set when I was young.   My Dad and I built tracks on a 4'X8' sheet of plywood.  Cut a hole in the middle.   Got tracks from somewhere and cut wood ties to put them on.  Even had small spikes to hold the rails down.  Of course had to link the rails together for electric to run the train.   worked pretty well.   One of these days may open the box to see what the trains looked like.  Think they were American Flyer or something like that.

Always had trains as a kid and bought one for my son when he was around 6 years old. He still has the engine after 40 years. It's a 4662 articulated HO steam engine. He will probably get it set up someday for his son. I also have a solid hand made brass steam engine and tender I got from an old mans son a few years ago. I keep it in a glass display case on my desk. I'll never run it since it is something special and want to keep it like new.
