I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to

Wow the clarity of the water and the ice is really something. Must have been very calm winds when the temps dropped with no precipitation.

we get this almost every year at first ice when ice fishing in late december before the snow flies.  Pretty eerie when you can see weeds and fish 5-10' down swimming around underneath you on only 3" of ice.

In my 30 years of icefishing, I've seen ice that clear only once (3" - 4" thick).  Creepy to say the least, and pucker factor off the charts when my 270lb azz would cause a crack  uglystupid2  Usually there are air bubbles or snow/slush on the surface.

We had that last week at the cottage. The water is super clear anyway but you only get ice that nice when it freezes under zero wind/movement

yah, usually not that super clear of ice, but have had it almost that clear before and creeps me out walking on it when I know the ice is only 3-4" thick first ice and knowing you are in well over 10' of water or more.   I bring ice picks with a strap around my neck just in case, but so far, haven't found out if I can pull my 280+lb. frame up onto the ice if fallen in.  They say it can be done if don't panic, but better do it in a hurry for I have been in near 32 degree water while boating for a few minutes, and only in a few minutes walking in that cold of water your legs finally go numb and I couldn't hardly move/walk.

Growing up on an island on Lake Erie waterfront, we played on the ice all the time.

There was an important rule; before we were sure it was 8" to 3' thick, you always carried a 12 foot pole horizontally (like the Flying Wallendas) on your first few test walks.  When you go thru ice in water over your head, it is nearly impossible to ever climb back out on your own.  And with a 7 knot current under the ice (from the Detroit River), if you went thru, there was real good chance your last minutes would be spent in terror pounding on the bottom of solid ice drifting further and further away from the hole you fell thru (out toward Toledo and Sandusky).

The only ice I like anymore is mixed with liquids of various types in a glass.
