In the UK some city councils are selling abandoned homes for one pound sterling with the agreement that the new owner has a specific time in which to rehab and use the home as their primary residence.
Seems to be working quite well.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that is what they are doing in Detroit with empty lots next door, I think for something like a dollar or something cheap. Or am I mistaking.

Born and bred detroiter here. I tried to write a response to this, but it was getting so long I would have needed my own board. I could talk about what happened here for days. Thing is, people that live in the suburbs still consider themselves Detroiters, they always have. All the grit and hard work is still out there, waiting for their shot at rebuilding our once great city. The ones that failed would do well to just stay out of the way and watch it happen.

I whole heartedly wish Detroiters well in their quest to revive a once great city. Having said that, to make a little extra cash, I transport cargo, vehicles and materials from point A to point B. We have a university here that is considered a minority school with a lot of kids from Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis and other larger cities. I often get asked to transport broke down vehicles back to Dad. Detroit is one of the few places I won't go unless they go with me and I'm armed.
I've made a few trips to Detroit where I felt like I was lucky to get out of the city alive. Nope, not a city I like to visit.

I never got inside the airport, which was really empty of cars when we were there Gman and I did stop there twice to pick up and later drop off the wives Thanks Gig for the hospitality That was during the Michigan ride in a few years ago Didnt look dangerous to me, but then again it was daylight Wish those fighting for their city's survival well.

Well, I see room for growth. All that land is close to downtown. Attract business into that area. Build better housing. Start a new school. Attract upstart professionals. In a few years it will be a whole different area.

Oss, Take my word on this, the airport is not a good reflection of Detroit. This I promise. I hope it changes but, there are areas in Detroit I won't travel after dark. Just being honest.

Even though I had a few bad experiences there, that sadly detoured from Detroit, I also have some excellent experiences and memories there. Even though Detroit have there issues, hopefully they will get resolved one day. But keep in mind there is still allot of good people there and for them I hope they succeed. Because if you look at the pictures, you can see the city has potential.

Moved there in 1966 from Calif. Actually Warren, just north of Detroit, had a great time and it was booming. Also lived in Mt. Clemens, 1970, still a nice place, then left. good memories of friends, etc. I hope it will rebound some day.

Been to Detroit once in 1996 for a week long training class working for GM at the time in their fancy corporate downtown headquarters. Great food, places to eat and visit, but don't go out alone at night or you are asking for it for sure. Pretty scary all of us in a GM minivan going out to eat and the homeless on the street staying warm by burning barrels wrapping on the side of the van begging for money. Best part of the training week was going across the border into Canada to a strip club named Cheetahs.

I guess I have to repent a little concerning Detroit, there are a whole lot of good and historic memories. I lived two houses from 8 mile (Eminem made a movie about 8 mile)and two streets from Gratiot,(Gratiot was known for cruising like Woodward was) which in a way is kind of a historical corner. As a child I remember Grandma, which lived next door, taken me to the corner of 8 and Gratiot to get on a street car and we went in to Detroit shopping. See 8 mile and Gratiot was the turnaround for the street cars to go back to Detroit and on the Northeast corner was a large Amusement park called Eastwood Park. The elders use to tell me under their breath, that the Purple Gang members use to frequent there at the dance hall. For the people that know the area, on the corner that White Castle is on, one street west use to be another dance hall, called Club Royal, which had a series of escape tunnels to some of the house in the area. The Purple Gang members also frequents there, also. The Purple Gang were Dertroit bad boys, they said even Al Capone was afraid of them. I found this site with kind of data base of things that were available to the Michiganders. http://www.waterwinterwonderland.com/amusementpark.aspx?id=304&Type=2

Purple Gang was a Jewish gang that ran bootlegging btw Windsor & Detroit. They were bad ass. When Capone left NYC to strike out on his own & make his fortune in Detroit, the Purple Gang kicked his ass - he was lucky to survive. He went to Chicago where he could act tough. Just like Hells Angels. They tried to make a presence in Detroit and promptly got their asses kicked by the Highwaymen, turned tail and ran away. They a afraid to come to Detroit, like a lot of pussies that sit back whining about how scary it is here Detroit is an awesome place to hang out, I be there often, always a great time, never had any problems in 50 yrs. Got a room booked this weekend walking distance to brewpub & Rockabilly venue - caint wait! Not a chance any of these keyboard Detroit bashing whiner pussies will be there - Woo Hoo!

Interesting what you said, just a little bit harsh, but interesting!!! I always had an interest in local history, organized crime and prohibition. In fact the neighborhood I use to live in and the area I live in now has a rich history in prohibition. Back in the passed, I read some articles and on TV on PBS station watched programs about prohibition. There was something that caught my attention that never seemed to get answered. In these programs and articles, Al Capone always came up, as in those days, when booze use to get transported from Windsor to Detroit and much of it was for Al Capone, the thing they mentioned is that Al had it transported under a assumed name, which never made sense to me. He was Al Capone, he didn't need to assume anything, so why. But what you just said about Al and the Purple Gang, if it is accurate, that would answer the question.

I had no idea you were sitting back trashing my hometown OR that you consider yourself a pussy. Thanks for outing yourself, I guess I'd be glad to call you anything you like. Your call. Geez, I haven't been "dared" since probably 1970. Real " keyboard hero" action (on your part).
