Had it around the chest once about 6-7 years ago. Painful and sensitive (just my shirt touching it was painful). Happy to report it has never returned. Mine was not a very extensive rash, but what was there was bad enough. I could not afford to miss work (not the money, the work quota), so I told no one and just went to work.
The really unlucky ones get it wrapped around the head into one eye.
The returning childhood chickenpox virus makes for interesting reading, but they really don't seem to know that much about it. I believe it may be related to having your immune system getting compromised by age and other bad health events in your life. Like the trouble you went thru a few months ago. There's a vaccine of some sort, I didn't get it. I believe they gave me some topical creme, like 1% hydrocortizone, and pain pills. Other than that, you get to ride it out.
Best of luck.

The rash is in the lower/right groin area. The pain is lower/right back and down the right leg to my knee. Back is freakin' killing me. And nope....just got some vacines last week....shingles wasn't one of them. They told me I needed to wait 'till later 'cause I was getting all of those other shots and they don't mix so well with the shingles shot. Stupid timing. Doc gave me a handful of drugs to take. Hope they work. And yep.....Doc said that I'm still healing from my surgery from last June. Probably a contributing factor.

When I was 8 or 9 years old I got the chicken-pox's about two weeks after that I got the shingles. I can still remember how much pain I was in. They claim I have a 4% chance of catching the shingles again. I'm hoping that never happens.

I've had the Shingles shot but one thing you need to remember; it only reduces your chances of getting Shingles about 50/50, and not permanent. In either case, I'll take those odds when compared to the actual affliction. My wife can't get the shot due to taking chemo meds which suppresses her immune system. Dr. said she can't do it because the shot is a "live" virus that beefs up the immune system and would really do a number on her. She suffers enough without adding that to the list. I didn't have any side effects from the shot, some people have a major reaction.

Sorry to hear, I hear from others that it is REALLY painful. Here, read this. http://drmirkin.com/morehealth/g164.htmlYou can be treated, but time is of the essence. I like this guy, he gives all the medical journal references to take to your Dr as to why you should be treated this way.

Got my shot 2yrs ago. I was still working at that time so it was free. Have several friends that had to deal with it so I know from them what you are dealing with is very painful. Read up on shingles since this thread started. Some say the vaccination is good for life, at this point only God knows how long or short that is. Some say 6-8 yrs. Hope I don't need to see my doctor for a while but will ask when I see her. Prayers for you BF. It will pass and from what I read you can get the shot and not have to suffer with it again. I'm with you John, 50/50 is better than nothing.

Been there, done that. My outbreak was on the right side of my neck, and worked it's way over the skull and into my right eye. Damaged the cornea and cost me some eyesight The only thing I've encountered that was more painful was a flaming Bultaco.

My buddy Kent got them. Then my Aunt got them. Then my wife's horse got something called "strangles". Then my wife got shingles. I kept saying she had strangles ... hope your case clears up soon... -Mike

My wife had them a few years ago on her back. Very painful! I got the shot at age 58, after my wife's episode I wasn't going to take any chances. Hope you have a speedy recovery!

Get better BF! Do whatever the Doc says.
I turned 60 this year so I got the vaccine a few weeks ago.....only 50% effective they claim but will reduce the severity if'n I do get it.

Drugs seem to be working I guess. All I know at this point is that virtually everything hurts big time. Hope this doesn't last too long.
