I don't need a flashlight app (or a cell phone) at all.

When they come up with a .357 magnum app, I might be interested.

That story's mostly an ad. Notice they keep hyping the one "safe" app? Yeah...

A quote from the Snopes article is certainly good advice:

"All in all, as the Guardian noted, "developers are often asking for far greater power over a user's device, in order to collect data and sell it on to marketers and ad networks. It's the latest reminder that if you're not paying for an app, its business model may well involve selling your data." But in this regard it doesn't appear that flashlight apps are a particularly greater security risk than any other form of app — users take similar risks whenever they download any type of free app, not just flashlights."

FWIW I use "Flashlight Widget" and it's 60KB and only requires access to the camera.

What about the flashlight that is already on the i-phone? It wasn't an app I downloaded it came on the phone.

Personally I have always been skeptical of the agreement policies to downloading apps, that's why I don't add any apps on my devices. Technology is out of control. Maybe I'm just old fashioned..... but if I need a flashlight, I go get my flashlight. Ever notice if you are checking out items on line, then come back to your computer the next day, maybe going through Facebook & there are ads showing the items you were looking at the day before!  Big brother is always watching. police................. just my humble opinion

Very interesting post John. Thanks!

I've had a smart phone (without a flashlight app) for years, but just get increasingly irritated with every update of apps wanting access to and control over everything on the phone! Originally, I was interested in the technology because of what it would do for me. Now the trend is toward what it may do to me. My service carrier, Verizon, forces me to have some apps on there I don't want and don't use. The app whole industry has  I M H O become controlling, bullying, and intrusive. It's therefore less useful. I may have bought my last smart phone. tickedoff

We've been on several rides and able to pull up doppler and run from severe weather ( Tornado Warnings and Severe Thunderstorms )  is a huge plus and one of the favorite things I like about having a iPhone.

I'm with Bighead, I've owned nothing but a flip phone for more years than I can remember. It makes calls and takes calls. It's a phone....nothing more, and it's all I need. I don't even own a laptop, just one PC desktop type. My kids and grandkids think I'm nuts and old fashioned, they're probably right. But at least I'm not sitting there with my nose in a phone while ignoring everyone around me.

I don't need no high-falutin, stinkin cell pho... nevermind, that's BS.

If I were actually "anti-technology" I wouldn't be using a computer to communicate... just like those guys that pretend to be afraid of technology :/

But back on topic; I use "Open Flashlight"
