I follow a "One deal a day" site called meh.com and today's offering caught my eye... It's a small hand held battery pack that you can carry around to charge phones, tablets and the like, these are becoming quite common these days, the twist it, this one claims to have the amperage and appropriate cabling to also jump start a car...

At just under $50 I haven't pulled the trigger on one yet, but I'm definitely considering it. Keeping one of those tucked away in the saddle bag would definitely be good insurance, I think... AND can charge your phone up too...

Anyway, figured I'd share it. This is one of those "One deal a day, then gone forever" sites, so this will only be available from them until 11PM Central tonight.

I looked at one recently (co-worker has it).

It won't jump start a car with a DEAD battery... but it does claim to put out a few hundred amps (don't remember the exact number) for a short period of time.

So, if your battery is LOW but not quite dead (maybe a dead cell or something)... it will give you 5-10 seconds of extra "oomph" to get your car started.

So.... not the end-all-save-all for backup battery power... but could possibly get you out of a pinch on those days when your battery is on it's way out, but not quite there yet.

Make sure you bring it inside and charge it every 4 or 5 weeks so it stays topped off.

I only pointed it out (from down in the specs), I made no judgment about it.

I could not find a weight.

And two model no's are listed (Models 9597 and 9599) but no different specs or price given for either. Though it comes in black and red, but I don't know if that is the only diff in model no's or not.

I actually have one similar to it and its pretty good. Tried it on all sorts of cars even one with a dead battery, I mean really dead and it started it. I was really amazed that it did start some of the vehicles it did, some slowly but they started. Mine cost 100.00 and looks similar but mine specifically says don't run the vehicle with this attached and this may be the same.

I've had one for about a year now and love it, they all seem to look alike except for color. The day i got mine it started my 1500 dodge with a 360 gas engine and the battery was so low it would not light up the dash. I've since used it on a couple of trucks and 34 or 4 bikes. Perfect size to carry in a saddlebag and that is where it stays. Should also mention several places are starting to carry them I even saw one from Battery Tender.

I believe I posted on this exact item before in the Tech section.

Like this time, there was posts from owners who said it did what it claimed to do.

I do not recall the $ back then, but most likely over a year ago already. Very tempting to buy and have along on a long journey. But I figure if the battery dies, I can still push start the bike. If the alt goes, nothing, including this little charger, will help.

found the post,

not the same name.

I think for the $50 I would try the back up if I could only buy it. Some of these sites don't work for Canadians.

Interesting... I admit that I didn't try out the one I looked at, but I didn't think the amperage output would work that well.

What's the cranking amps on the one you have?

I was looking at getting one for the wife... just haven't researched all that much.

I have had one of those for a while now. Got it from a MATCO tool dealer. Being a professional auto tech I was skeptical until I tried it. Since then I have jumped quite a few cars some with DEAD batteries. I even started a squad car that the cop was picking up from us with a dead battery. The cop was amazed that little thing could start a dead car. Oh I also have taken it on a few bike trips just in case. At Ashville I used it charge my smart phone outside at the tables.
