Kudos to him Robin.  He does a great service.  cooldude cooldude

Fires can consume buildings so fast and people don't realize it.  We lived in a 80 year old house once and when I saw the lumber that was used to build it and all the fine wood hairs sticking out of the lumber.  I always said to my wife that if the house ever caught fire we might not make it out.  That stuff lights up lightning fast.  That is why lumber is smooth now.  Doesn't catch fire so easily.

I take it that your son is a volunteer firefighter.  My kudos to him.

We live in a township outside of Rochester that has, in the past been serviced by a volunteer fire unit, not the Rochester, full time, department.  One year after building our home, I came home one Sunday morning to find my next door neighbor and my son fighting a grass fire in the empty lot on the other side of my neighbor's house.  I quickly changed clothes, grabbed a shovel and joined them.  My first concern was to keep the flames away from the neighbors LP tank.  The volunteer fire department took 25 minutes to arrive, and then quickly doused the grass fire.  But the fire had spread into the woods that are behind our homes, so we had to now get in there and deal with forest hot spots without the aid of a water truck.  Buy now nearly all of our neighbors had joined us, but this was the type of neighborhood get together we can do without.

We are now serviced by the Rochester fire department, and the city is building a new fire station on our edge town, only 3.5 miles away.

Awesome! I been a vol since 1996. I perfer the medical side now. Not sure how much more my back will take doing it. 2 weeks ago I reached to undo a cap on a tanker to hook up a hose and my back popped and dropped me to my knees. At least hope to make it to get my 20 in.

I've rolled in on a few fires like that in my day. They get so hot that water turns to steam and is then lifted away from the fire. All you can do is protect the perimeter. Most firemen feel that in their hearts as well as their skin. The loss is palpable.
