Honest to God, I just heard the local weather guy on TV say......"The highlight of the weeks weather will be on Thursday when the high is 10 degrees".  That's THE HIGH!
I thought you guys down south would like that.

Come on Dave,  You know outside of Minnesota they only want to hear about the below zero temps.

We got snow with the cold in SE MN last night. Not enough to get the blower out but enough to shovel. I will not trade this for the weather in Mississippi last night though. Prayers to the folks down there that were hit with Tornadoes.

Yup, temp dropped 30o's in one day.  We have a saying up here, if you don't like the weather, it will change, probably for the worse...

Went ice fishing yesterday. Started out ok and then took a real turn for the worst. The wind would have taken the portable ice house down the lake if there wasn't someone sitting in it. We left the lake at 6 pm and froze our hands trying to pack up everything. We were north of Park Rapids  and it was below 0. We have good ice now so I can get the permanent house out. This one is like sitting in your living room.  Smiley

One more turn should do it!

Kent, Ohio

« Reply #9 on: January 04, 2015, 07:03:40 AM »

Beautiful NE Ohio, Kent to be exact. About 35 miles SE of Cleveland and Lake Erie. Think it has been raining since Friday if I remember correctly. Saturday rain but decent temps, 40 something. As I type it's 47*. Suppose to make it to 55* but before Jan 4th comes to an end it is suppose to hit 19*. Rest of week high in mid 20's, over night single digits, sporadic snow, little accumulations. The water line breaks and snow plowing has made me hate winter! When I was 35 didn't bother me, @ 52 I detest it. Time and the job has taken a toll!

I've seen that portable ice fishing sno-boat type fly across the lake with even 1 person in it, don't ask me how I know.  With no people in it, it is like a giant tall piece of cardboard just tipping and skidding on ice instantly with say 25+ mph winds.  Wind is not our friend either in WI, not just MN.

This past week we've had record cold weather but by Wed it's going to be 72. Come on down. The hotels would love it.

Well, a -30 wind chill ain't nothin', wait until you have -40 to -45 actual temp, THEN throw in a little breeze. Not unusual when I was stationed in northern Maine in the early 60's. We used to tell the new guys to the area; never relieve yourself out on the flightline in winter unless you have a sheepskin sleeve over it. You'll have frostbite before you're done and that wasn't a joke. And if you do such a thing, be sure to back away from the stream as you're going. If you don't, it will freeze upstream and into your member.....very painful. The wideeyed young ones were the troops we had the most fun with, but there was some truth to the frostbite issue. At -40 and unprotected, you could in fact be damaged in short order, and that was painful. When asked where to get the sheepskin sleeve, we told them they were custom fit by the locals. It was always good for a chuckle, and the newbies to the base had a chance to pass it on after a couple months on station.  Grin

Spent the winter in MN, about 60 miles south of International Falls, back in the '70's.   We were working in the woods in -20 degree temps (high for the day).  This was from December to end of February.   Actually went snowmobiling with landlord at night in -30 degree temps and enjoyed it.
It is just getting use to the cold and then surviving in it.

Joe, wed night let the water dribble just a little. It wastes a little water but if its moving it won't freeze  solid. broken pipes are a pita.

So this is what I woke to this morning at about 30 degrees.

That will be the high for the week since it will be around -4 tonight and high close to 6 (above) tomorrow. Few more inches in the forecast for Monday night and highs hovering around 0 degrees for the rest of the week. All temps are in Fahrenheit for all you who are accustomed to Celsius.

You gotta admit, that backyard pic above looks pretty nice, even for winter.

Looks to be a nice neighborhood you live in as well.

I think as long as you keep moving and dress warm,  the cold isn't too bad to enjoy.  I dislike wind more than the cold in winter because 2-3" of snow piles on up to over 1 foot all the time in my driveway thanks to that 'drifting' word.   I shoveled this late morning the at most 2" and went back out a few hours ago and 6" was drifted right up next to my garage door yet again.  Thanks Mr. Wind.

No snow here yet, but wednesday and thursday we're supposed to have overnight lows in the mid-teens (coldest temps this winter so far). It was about 70 earlier this afternoon with severe thunderstorms off to my east / southeast.

If it were not for the 280 ft of sidewalk that has to be cleared after a snowfall (big snow-blower), I actually enjoy the snow. If you have to endure the cold, you might as well have something to play in. Skis, sleds (motorized), and the fun of watching the potential Darwin award finalists speeding down ice covered streets suddenly realize they can't stop. We had rain and sleet last night so there is about an inch of ice under the pretty stuff.

Look at Crackerborn's pic, that will probably give ya a hint. They better bring something a little warm to wear.

highs in the teens for the game at lambeau should favor the packers since will slow down the high speed artificial turf speed of the cowboys defense and offense.  Or so in theory anyways.

Definitely not the ice bowl, but will be pretty darn cold to smack bodies around.  In high school that first few series hitting in the 40 degree temps playing football was bad until the body got warmed up, but playing in 10-15 degree temps is another matter all together.
