One of our medics had a 90% blockage and he thru a clot and had a massive stroke. His entire left brain is infarcted or dead. With surgery he has a 15% survival rate but would be a vegtable the rest of his life. Do nothing and he will have a few days. He told us he never wanted that or he would haunt us the rest of our lives lol. He had a hard life growing up with drugs and stuff. Always funny having him tell his stories. Always looked up to him a medic and hoped to be good as he was. He got me hook on the State EMS Compition.  Intraduced to his biker gang friends and the local town hoodlums. We drank and partied alot back in the day. Even been shot at together lol. Back when he drank his saying was 'Someones goin to jail tonight!' He was a very popular person in the community. Did alot for the less fortunate and food banks. Did some grant writing and always got us some money and items for PR events. Excellent dispatcher and always made sure the map books were updated. Been in EMS for 20+ yrs. If something wasnt right he went to the top and got it fixed. He knew people.
We went and saw him today. He is no longer opening his eyes. None purposefull movement on the left. I didnt want to go see him but other coworkers were there and it made it alot easier. We joked about all the pranks he would do and we threatened to do some to him if he didnt wake up. Family is gonna stop all his drips sat and let him go the way he wanted. Gonna be tough on us. He was only 49. We have another former medic that is gonna pass soon also. Hes even younger. 2015 not looking good in our Family.

Hey Fudge, if he has no movement or response on the left side, it must be the right side of his brain is gone. Feel sorry for all those affected, that's much too young for someone to go.

Brian, thoughts and prayers from Iowa for you EMS buddy.

Been there and done that on a relative about 7 years ago.

She was 39, would have been 40 on March 1st.    She passed February 23rd.

She left her husband of 20 years and 4 kids.

I went to see her but it was tough.

I'll sign off on this before I get accused of high jacking this post.

Correct. His left brain is infarcted so he has no movement on his right. Only nonpurposful movements on the left. Act as a TBI pt. Traumatic brain injury.

Still a tough situation. Does he have any family, anywhere? The man obviously had a big heart judging by your description of his activities. My mother also had a stroke and a few years later had a second one that took her. The first one happened while I was giving her a hug after a dinner out. Watching the side of her face look like it was sliding off and her slurred "I'm sorry Johnny" as she started to sink, that will stick in your mind forever. Some years later she had a second one on Good Friday, passed on Easter morning. Seemed fitting somehow.

Heartfelt prayers for the family.

Prayers to the family. So sad hear this. It's so hard for families to make make the decision to let a loved one go. But sometimes recovery just is not possible.  These situations are terrible and the reason we need health care directives.

Sad to lose someone so close. We don't live in a vacuum though, someone will have to fill the void left from his passing, could be you.

Sorry to hear about this Brian.
It's not easy.  I have lost a Sister-In-Law and a high school buddy in the last couple of weeks.
Both 60, both to brain cancer.

Sorry to hear this Brother. This is where the "Family " of Emergency services comes to lean on each other.  Just remember that as the experienced members of this career make their last runs we become the experienced members tasked with teaching the new recruits the way it should be done. It sounds as though he taught you well and had a Hell of a LOT of fun along the way.  Don't ever forget any of it, and make damn sure the newbies learn from it the same way he taught you.  Peace and prayers for you and his family brother.
