This has been brought up before but it appears to be moving in the right direction and with bipartisan support just may pass.
Bill would protect the rights of motorcycle riders

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- Motorcycle-only checkpoints would be discouraged under a bipartisan bill reintroduced by a group of senators, among them New Hampshire's Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte.
The bill would prohibit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from issuing grants to states for motorcycle-only checkpoints. The agency initiated a program in 2009 that provided states with funds to conduct the checkpoints.
The senators say they are discriminatory, where riders are specifically targeted by police to check that their vehicles meet state standards for noise, handlebar length, tire condition and other requirements.
Shaheen said there aren't checkpoints that stop cars to check their tire pressure, so there shouldn't be checkpoints for motorcycles, either.
Other senators reintroducing the bill are Susan Collins of Maine, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

New York is famous for motorcycle only checkpoints. For such a beautiful state I can't wait to get out of it.

Yep! Have been following this through the AMA and did my part as well.
Amazing to see the lack of response here about it. An oil thread brings out more responses!!

Several years ago at the Springfield Mile, the Il. State Police had a safety check point set up on the main drag. There was several MC gangs present. The ape hanger crowd (no turn signals) was flagged through while my wife and I were stopped on our I/S. They asked to see Lic. registration & proof of insurance. No check of safety equipment what so ever. We were stopped on the way back from the track and went through the same thing again. The only thing I could figure was they were told set up a check point and only stopped the bikes they thought were legal to avoid any confrontation. The MC only check point we went through in Savanna, they were writing tickets for lic plate lights and DUIs. Tax dollars at work?

Place not too far from me called Twin Bridges that has a M/C meet in the late summer or early fall. They sit at a T-intersection. Couple years ago Missouri's Finest was there checking M/Cs ONLY.  Hope this bill eliminates THAT M/C only check! RIDE SAFE. |

Any State could fund a MC only checkpoint under that Bill.
If that bothers you then get involved. Join the AMA, ABATE, MRF, and/or your local Confederation of Clubs.
Write, call, and email your state legeslators, especially those on Transportation Committee.
It all starts (and ends) with the individual and his ability to communicate with those he/she elected to represent them.

I'm glad you piped in Momz, I know you have championed this issue and other biker rights. I've been in touch with my state representatives, am a member of Abate and the AMA. I sign petitions although that's about as active as I've been. I've never been stopped on my bike but several times in my cage. Didn't have a problem with that. Stopping bikes only just isn't right. |

I guess I don't get out much, never knew there was such a thing as MC only checkpoints.
Seems unethical and stupid to me. I'd probably tell the cop in his face doesn't he have anything better to do than bug us legal, licensed, law abiding citizens?
I have no patience for stupidity.
