Well rifles were illegal in national parks back then.  BATFE should check it's records.   2funny

I don't see how something could lean on a tree "for years" and not
be at least partially absorbed into the growing tree...

If only leaning with light weight of rifle, wouldn't slow growth just keep pushing it outward?

I've seen the motorcycle-absorbed-by-a-tree picture, but that was a lot more weight against the tree.

Ida know. I leaned a small log against a persimmon tree a few years ago,
and they are now one.

Seems like that as the tree grows, over time gaining circumference, the rifle would fall away from the tree  ???

I have a ring of car keys down in the Lake Erie bottom ooze somewhere.  (that sucked   tickedoff)

I don't think they'll turn up anytime soon.

Growing up on an island in the mouth of the Detroit River on Lake Erie, every 7-8 years or so with just the right circumstances of wind, current, yada, the water would go out for a quarter to half mile.  We found all kinds of old stuff out there.  Including bootleg whiskey from the prohibition days.  And giant old carp.

After big storms, I found two drowned men floating face down at the end of our dock (couple years apart).  Boaters needed to pay more attention to storm warnings and small craft advisories.

I leaned a small part of a aluminum ladder against a maple tree for the kids to climb on...20 years later it is now part of the tree.

I googled up the area after I made my post... its where those 5,000 year old bristlecone pines
are.... I bet they don't grow very fast...

I think a lot of you are jumping to a wrong conclusion here.  The story says the rifle is 132 years old.  Nowhere does it claim, assume, or indicate that the rifle had been left there for 132 or even any more than a short few years.

That gun looked like it was there many years.  You figure, a guy isint going hunting with an OLD OLD gun, maybe just an old gun so maybe it was a 30-50 year old gun when it was originally left there.  It could have been there by the tree since then, that's what it looked like to me.  I hope the owner wasn't eaten by a bear  Shocked
