There is always more than one side to a story. The background and research makes a difference.
However, I'd still be willing to introduce wolves into DC and see what happens. All politicos should be fair game.

You want to know what has made a drastic change in Yellwostone? From Serk's link above:

"And invasive lake trout may be wreaking more havoc on the ecosystem than was ever caused by the loss of wolves."

I've visited Yellowstone many times since 1978 and in 2013 when we were there I was amazed we couldn't catch a single Cutthroat trout. It seems non-native Lake Trout are killing most of the Cutthroat and that has an effect right up the food chain to the grizzly bears.

Hmmm, I'll be darned. Hadn't heard that, but, that doesn't mean anything. Makes sense though I guess.
I grew up fishing Lake Trout. These are actually Char and have different spawning patterns  than Trout. But they certainly are good predators and what the article says makes sense.
The Lake Trout doesn't seem to affect the Salmon and other Trout in this area, but, I guess that doesn't mean anything.
I'm wondering how the Lake Trout was introduced.

Wolves were reintroduced to the Adirondack's a while ago. Don't know how thats been working out except that they have been know to get together with coyotes which is why they are so big around here. At least that what 'they' say.

You want wolves we have wolves. Come to Minnesota and take all you want. But don't spend money on a deer tag in northern M.N. you will be eaten track soup. Don't let your dog go in the woods or if you live in a far north town your back yard. Wolves and deer in M.N. need to be managed we don't need too many or too little of either. The tree huggers have won again in court and blocked the taking of any wolves.

Interesting posts that point out the problem with science, that is the human factor. One day coffee is ok the next its the big killer, one day what was ok is not the next. Of course everyone being certain that their point is true and correct till its not. I try as much as I can to make decisions based on prayer, thought, experience since it may cost me. These people are playing God with to many factors and to little grey matter. Time will tell the real results but it may not even be in our lifetime. I would say take out all the self interest and personal rewards and see what this really boils down to. But that would be to much to ask of science since it really is its own religion. Personally I am happy that Yellowstone is doing better its a beautiful place with so many wonders of nature. It would be a sad day to see us loose this great national resource because someone thinks they have the answer.

I sure don't want wolves. I don't want coyotes either, I hate them and kill everyone I can.

When I left Wy in 2002, the elk number had exploded in the Jelly Stone area.  Deer populations were going down.  Elk were considered the cause of deer numbers falling due to completion for forage.  Now I see they think the wolves were the cause.  Strange.   Deer are considered browsers, ie eat woody plants, elk are more grazers, ie eat grasses.   Both when favorite food is gone will eat anything they can chew.

Also one should consider the Major fires in last part of the 1980's  (forget the year).  Those fires opened up areas for aspen to regenerate.   If you follow what happens after fires, aspen with come in petty strong, then the confirs (pines) will come in and reduce the aspen.  This happens decades after the fires.  Maybe this was the real cause of the aspen returning.

...In Michigan we had that problem. Wolves were protected under the Federal Endangered Species Act, then we got a republican governor, and he promptly took them off the list and had the DNR set up a "lottery" so folks could go out in the woods and kill themselves one. A lot of people didnt agree with this move, and organized to get the wolf voted back on the endangered list. The governor and his powerful friends, didnt  like this so they did what they do best and figured out a way to void the vote and silence the peoples voice.
They went on about how these wolves are dangerous and no good so folks should be able to get rid of them. For proof they used a "farmer" who lived up in the UP, who claimed that wolves were killing his live stock and should be killed. The State gave him a couple thousand dollars and a delivered a bunch of building material to build a fence and keep those menacing wolves out. He gladly took the money...left the building material in a pile by his barn and put his farm up for sale. Later it came out that he had fabricated the entire story and that none of his livestock had ever been attacked of killed by wolves or any other predator. Seems he just had the same morals as the Governor and his pals.

And that "vote" ? Well it seems that with the backing of a few wild life organizations...(I belong to the one below)....The wolf is now back on the Endangered Species List and once again it is against the "law" to harm or kill ANY wolf in the state of Michigan.
