Dragon: A mythical fire breathing beast of great size.

They are called the dragon for their size and power. Have you compared the size of your bike to the biggest harley? Pretty much dwarfs it.

They call it dragon, because they are embarrassed, because Valkyrie is a girl. She is a warrior maiden. The thing is, if you really know anything about women, then you don't want to piss them off.  LOL

As you are relatively new I must apologize for some of the smart ass answers you received.

A few of the answers were either correct or pretty close.  The earliest explanations I remember for the nickname have to do with the dragon being a mythical beast that is beautiful and powerful and flies.

Somewhere in there may be a suspicion of the Harley riders calling there bikes hogs.  The comparison of a dragon to a hog may have tripped someone's mind.  I don't think that is necessarily a legitimate explanation.

The H.O.G originated in 1983.  It will be easy for you to find the reference to Harley motorcycles as hogs predated the H.O.G by decades.

Jess,  Valk wheelbase is 3" longer than a HD in similar matching designs.

67" vs. 64" may not seem like a lot, but when I compare side by side an ultra classic vs. my Valk I/S, the wheelbase makes it seem larger (longer and bigger), plus comparing the stock seat for both passenger and rider,  the Valks is bigger, especially the passenger seat.

Doesn't hurt the Valk engine is more massive being much wider and 6 pipes out the front/sides make it appear much larger than it really is.  A HD rider I know calls our Valks a boat anchor but I know he is just jealous is all.  His HD there is nothing to it all engine and nothing else, looks smaller than say a honda 750cc magna in stature but know his v-twin more upright in design is around 1600cc.

Way back in the beginning one of the first sites was The Dragons Den, I believe it predated the VRCC and the VOA.  They were the first that associated the Valkyrie with the dragon, and it stuck.

If you need proof, just try to ride your Valkyrie at around 80Km/h. That high pitched whine you hear is the pissed off Dragon wanting to go faster. Keep it wound up until your exhaust is blowing flames, and watch the Harley riders running scared.
