Greetings!

I have a 2003 Std, and need to take the seat off to service the battery.

So,,,, you turn the key a 1/4 turn clockwise? and then what?  do you keep turning and it pops up or ?

Do you pull up on the front of the seat or back?

When I turn the key a 1/4 turns that's as far as it will go.  I don't want to break the key...

any help would be appreciated.

It is the front of the seat that will pull up.  Try initially pushing DOWN on the nose of the seat, then turn the key and see if it doesn't release

Yeah... there's a short little cable that the key is supposed to pull that
then is supposed to undo the latch holding the front of the seat. Disuse
can gum up (or worse, crust up) the works. If you can't get it to do right
with Chrisj's trick, maybe you can remove the left side cover and
see what is going on back there... maybe squirt lube, maybe jiggle
the cable. If you still have the owner's manual, it outlines how to take
the side cover off, whatever, don't break its little tabs...

ok,

will the key turn past the 1/4 turn when it releases?

No, 1/4 of a turn is all it does.  Your seat might actually be released if the key turns that far.  Maybe you just need to tug on the nose of the seat while holding the key at full turn

Jess from VA

If pushing down on the nose while carefully keying doesn't release it, get someone to sit on it while carefully keying.  If that doesn't work, then go fishing under the side cover.  Do not bend or break the key.

hmmm ok the key only turns a 1/8 of a turn, it feels pretty solid after that.

so when it does open it should turn to a full 1/4 turn?

You should be able to see the latch after the left side cover is removed. See if turning the key will release it or at lease move it.

By the way my key can turn 90 degrees.

90° = 1/4 of a turn

I would imagine that latch is not unlatched at 1/8 turn.  If you cant get it to turn more by putting pressure on the seat, as was said, you need to look see inside and clean, lube or whatever to get that thing moving

Thanks everyone,

I put a little machine oil on the key  inserted the key and let it sit a few minutes, and it opened right up.

Thanks for the help!
