and I can't get my Valk out of the shed / down the driveway.

Feb 16, twilight- I was hauling groceries (in this case 2 12 packs of pepsi cans), when I step on a rut in the driveway and (what I thought ) just turned it pretty severely (something I do regularly) - I did hear a pop or snap, went down, but was able to get back up, walk and finish bringing everything in. Left Ankle swelled up to twice normal size, and walking without an ankle brace was not pleasant.

Fast forward to Feb 24 -  Ankle has not been getting any better, and we had a forecast for snow (this is a big deal in my part of NC (around Raleigh)), so I thought it would be a good idea to call my foot and ankle doctor and get an appointment to get it looked at. It was already starting to snow, so it took me longer than normal to get there from work.  Based on presentation (still swelled up and quite tender), Doc decided X-rays were in order, where he found I had a possible fracture (and I've been doing pretty much normal things on it - including driving a manual transmission car !). He outfitted me with one of those velcro fastened boots to immobilize it (no way to drive a clutch with that on  - nor a motorcycle !).

Fortunate circumstances - we had just bought a 2015 VW Golf TDI with an automatic on the 22nd. The Golf is going to be the wife's, but I've got it until I can drive a stick again... Hopefully the boot can go back on Mar 13th (next appointment), because I'm expecting the weather to start improving enough to start riding again real soon..

Sorry to hear that but glad it didn't happen during peak riding season.

... where he found I had a possible fracture ...

I don't put much stock in doctors finding "possible" fracture.  I figure it mostly just adds to their bottom line.

It does sound like you took a reasonably painful shot to the ankle.  I hope it gets to feeling better.  Spring is coming on and you're going to need both feet.   Wink

Best of Luck scooper head.  Nice to see somebody in the nearby area.  hopefully that heals up nice enough to ride in the next few weeks.

I had something similar happen to me a couple of years ago when I was camping. Stepped out of the trailer onto some uneven pavement and immediately the ankle bent over at about 90 degrees and I went down. I heard and felt the pop. It was late at night and I was alone. Thought I was really screwed. I found that I could get up and actually walk on it, got back in the trailer and sat down. Within about 10 minutes, it had swollen to twice its size. It was sore for a couple of weeks but the swelling went down and whatever had pulled loose had taken care of itself with no after affects.

I feel your pain Scooper.

Last April 19th I decided to throw myself off a ladder at work, never heard a crack or pop, just me swearing a lot. Cheesy
Carried on working for 45 minutes, then decided to drive home (stick shift car). Got home and my wife forced me to go to the hospital. I went under protest saying it was just a sprain.

After x-rays I found I had 3 different fractures, one in the tibia and two in the fibula. Shocked

I was totally cheesed off, it was the start of the riding season and as I was self employed, not much cash coming in for over 3 months. Cry

In the grand scheme of things, sometimes a small clean fx can be better than a severe twisting sprain.  I badly sprained an ankle in HS, swollen up like a football with boot cut off; and besides some bad burns, this was the worst injury I ever had in my life, with recurrent symptoms for many years.  Ortho guys over the years told me a small clean fx would have healed stronger than the surrounding bone.  For twenty years after my bad sprain, all would be well until I sprinted or did something hard on the ankle, and it would swell and hurt again for a week or more (ie, easily resprain).

Take care of yourself, there's no telling how long you will live.  Grin

I have sprained both my ankles playing volleyball, the second time even my toes were black and blue. I wore an ankle brace for a long time after that, just stepping on a pebble would cause pain. I hope you have a speedy recovery.
2 years ago I got hit with a hockey puck right on the ankle  bone and had to crawl of the ice, after 10 weeks I could finally put my skates back on, never did go to the doctor. 2 weeks later my skate goes into a crack in the ice as I am turning  and again I have to crawl of the ice, go to the doctor and I have a spiral fracture down close to my ankle and they tell me it looks like I have had a recent ankle fracture also. Thru 5 weeks I cut my cast of three times and they got so sick of me I ended up with a strap on boot instead of a cast. I am self employed also, climb a later for a living and had no choice but to go to work. Again I hope you heal quickly I have had a lot of experience limping for months at a time its not fun.

Not an ankle, but last Nov I tore the muscle in my right hip, excruciating pain for a couple of weeks, then 3 weeks ago after the hip was almost healed, tore the muscle in my left calf just up from the ankle.  Dayum if it don't seem that I will be gimping around forever.  Shure hope this run of muscle tears is at its end, tired of the hitch in my gitalong.
