IRVINE, Calif. — The student government at University of California, Irvine has voted to ban display of the American flag — or any flag — from its lobby.

A resolution that was narrowly approved by the legislative council of the campus' Associated Students calls bans all flags from the common lobby area of student government offices, according to the Orange County Register. It prompted removal of the American flag from a lobby wall.

The student council approved the resolution on a 6-4 vote Thursday, with two abstentions. The executive cabinet was expected to consider a veto on Saturday.

The resolution authored by student Matthew Guevara of the university's social ecology school lists 25 reasons for the ban, saying that the American flag has been flown in times of "colonialism and imperialism" and could symbolize American "exceptionalism and superiority." The resolution says "freedom of speech, in a space that aims to be as inclusive as possible, can be interpreted as hate speech."

The American flag had hung on a wall in the student government suite. A few weeks ago, someone removed the flag and put it on the desk of Reza Zomorrodian, the Associated Students' president, with an anonymous note saying it shouldn't be in the lobby.

The executive members decided to put up the flag again. Then the resolution was brought to the council.

Zomorrodian, an opponent of the ban, said the American flag was "an iconic and symbolic representation of our values in the U.S."

On Friday, state Sen. Janet Nguyen, R-Santa Ana, said she and other legislators may introduce a state constitutional amendment to prohibit "state-funded universities and college campuses from banning the United States flag."

Give them a 3 or 4 year enlistment into the USMC and see if that doesn't change their attitude.

If not, then open the door and kick their ass out, say to Mexico.

I say we need to bring back the Register for the Draft and pick a few every year so as to keep a fiar size Military.

True exceptionalism requires honoring all that went before and honoring and understanding the sacrifices, blood sweat and tears and lives that went into a nation to be exceptional.  Just like you should honor your father and mother. If you do not then you are the one that is not exceptional and a fool not able to truly grasp execeptionalism and the heart of people who came before. You are not exceptional but worse than a idiot. Do not bring down that which is good bring up what is down and be proud to bring all up to the same level with the resources that inspired this good.

                                            To me they are traitors.

a person who is not loyal to his or her own country, friends, etc. a person
who betrays a country or group of people by helping or supporting an enemy
one who betrays another's trust or is false to an obligation or duty
                             one who commits treason

I like to find out what is this school about or believe below is a clip from the about page of the school. These kids are trained in criminal justice, and the legal system. The reason the US is exceptional is because we have put our values, guts and lives on the line. They are using their ability to be exceptional to throw away the very system that gave them that ability instead of using its benefits to instill and change the world. Why not use this exceptionalism and power to do good rather than to tear it down. Its like building a beautiful building and people admire it and love to sit inside and outside and some say its to beautiful lets tear it down. Or lets take the very values that gave us greatness and learn to be less.

Ban their government funding, grants and scholarships.  The flag should't be displayed on the wall,  it should be flown from a staff outside.

Notice it was authored by a kid named Matthew Guevara. I wonder just who one of his relatives is.
This may be genetic.

As I've wondered before, I still wonder if there is such a thing in this country as a conservative college/university.

This pisses me off to no end. If they don't like the flag of this country that so many died defending the need to get the f@@k out and don't come back. I remember a few years ago that some students in a school in CA that were mad over immigration pulled the stars and stripes down and put the Mexican flag up above it. I said the same thing then. If you don't like the ways thing are done in this country. GET OUT AND GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM. Oh and don't come back.....

Pappy would say " If you move in next to a pig farm , expect to smell pigs. But do not move a pig farm in next to me".

Why didn't the potus (piece of totally useless $h*t) go to another University.
I have read Mexicos' citizenship rules. I am sure someone will post a link. When you read them ,you will see what I think this counry should use. I am NOT in favor of the Mexican government , but their rules do not allow outsiders to change their way of life.

so you think it was OK for them to ban the flag?
or it was OK because it got reversed?

no, it was not "much to do about nuttin"

the fact that it actually got done in the first place, should cause us to wonder what is happening to our young people that they think this way

Maybe we should ban people from their halls, because they're maybe a few that seem offensive.

A bunch of college kids being stupid.....they reversed the decision......its not that big a deal.  They weren't banning the American flag per se.  They took down all flags to supposedly be more inclusive.  Dumb yes, a huge deal, well maybe not since they apparently came to their senses

I agree with Ricoman on this one, the students who enacted this did not come to their senses. Is this one of the ones that we are going to read about killing innocent people in the name of Jihad? This is exactly what is the problem. I know they are not Muslim but what is the difference, we have a president who is not pro US and we see the result, NO HARM?. By the way this was not reversed by the students who made this rule, it was the outcry that got the executive cabinet to overrule them. We hear no apology, no temporary insanity, no I was wrong from the ones who made it. So a criminal that does not admit to his crime is seen as unreformed I say no less these students.

Members of the executive cabinet of the Associated Students of UC Irvine met Saturday in an emergency session to reverse the flag ban.

It doesn't seem anyone remembers the name Guevara from about 5 decades ago.
