I know some of you had fun last year when I posted pics and videos of my son Ben. He had a GREAT season this year. He went 14-0 then dropped his first loss, at home to a kid we had never seen before. Then just this last weekend, we went to the state tournament where he went 3-0 with two pins and a MAJOR including retribution on the kid that beat him just the week before. Here are the links to the 3 matches from the state tournament. Don't worry, the first and 3rd ones are VERY short. The middle one is sort of long, and the camera work is terrible, but that's what I get for giving the camera to Mom. 1st round https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLOz8V_OXXM2nd round https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VafqvJfYiMoChampionship Round https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrBxGCSHwCQYou can click on my picture if you actually want to watch more videos, including the one of Ben getting pinned by the kid in the 2nd video a week prior. Enjoy! Final record 17-1 with 13 pins, 3 Majors and a 5 point decision. One of the majors was Ben being nice to a kid he really likes and not wanting to pin him and embarrass him. Jabba

Wow, that last championship round he dominated quickly. Maybe just me, but he looked a lot taller/bigger than the kid he went against in that round but am sure not since are weighted categories am sure. He has some guns on him, built like his old man, even better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats, out for some ice cream and other goodies afterwards, well deserved!

Congratulations to both of you. State Champ is a pretty big deal. Watching the videos, I believe his style is (and nickname should be) relentless. I like it!

Impressive, your son has great balance and has a great feel for leverage. If you watch his hips they are always centered, that is an innate ability.
I was a wrestler like your son many years ago. Continued on in high school, could have wrestled in college but enlisted in the Army instead. Continued wrestling on in the Army, Division Champ etc...
He is developing a life long skill set in many ways: physically it is easy to recognize, the mental aspect of the sport is what is the quite unseeing benefit though. I cannot express enough the courage it takes to take on an opponent by yourself with no one else to "carry your water". Particularly someone that has beaten him prior. The self confidence he is acquiring will benefit him his lifetime.
He will do well going forward, particularly if he has a good high school coach to take him to the next level of ability. One word of caution though, be very careful on the "cutting of weight" for lengthy seasons at a young age. I started cutting weight in 7th grade to make a weight class slot that would help the high school team. The cycle continued every season thereafter for the entire season and by the time I was a senior I was pretty burnt out on weight cutting. Hence I didn't wrestle in college, and it was only after a few years off I started wrestling in the Army again.
In short, watch the season long cutting when young,. A couple of days with few calories is fine and expected. The last few years of high school wrestling your expected to lead and are pretty intense. The kid will need energy for tough opponents and to trim down beyond normal at that point. That, unfortunately is just part of the sport.
As far as the video quality goes . . . pretty good considering. My friends would watch my mom during my matches, she would slide left and right on the bleachers five feet in each direction; wresting each opponent herself they would say. I wish I had video of that instead of me.
Best of luck.
David

Thanks Gentlemen.
Cutting weight. His idea. I told him he could NOT eat less. ONLY give up junk. He quit slushies, pop, candy, cookies and junk. For about a month. Lost 6+ lbs doing ONLY that. By the time he gets into high school he's gonna be a heavyweight anyway. All indicators say he's gonna be 6'-3" 240 lbs and about 7% body fat. I have heard that independently from about 4 different sources. We'll see if they know what they speak of.
It's all about fun now.
His 1st football practice ever one of the high school coaches came over to me, I was an assistant coach on the team, and pointed at Ben and said to me... "That kid is a wrestler isn't he?" uh... yeah. That's my son. He's been wrestling for 2 seasons already. He says... "I can spot them a mile away!"
HE told me he was nervous before the match with the kid that had beaten him. But only a little. Ben is pretty fearless, and has lots of experience losing. In many sports. That, in my estimation, is pretty important in life. Learning how to win, AND lose gracefully.

agree on the winning and loosing side. My 8th graders basketball team is not that good, only won 2 games in 3 seasons doing basketball mostly due to 1 kid who scores 90% of the points and is very good, but takes loosing pretty bad and cries some after the game since he knows he is good but the rest of the team is not. I know if I was on that team years ago I probably would not have wanted to play much as my kids team does now since they loose almost all the time, and pretty bad as well like scores of 60 to 12 or something like that. Other coaches I get upset at a few times, especially one, who I yelled over at him, in front of all to her me, telling him to take his starters out of the game and let the other 4-6 sitting on the bench (2nd-3rd stringers) play when the score is already at halftime like 30-6. It would make our kids team and the other team's kids who hardly ever play feel much better if on par as equals. Not much talent there on that team in my 8th graders class as well as the high school boys basketball team only winning 1 game this year as well. Anyways, at least my boy's 8th grade team doesn't take loosing too bad at all, they know it is coming so they don't care much. However, they did win their first game of the year just last week and are 1 and 0 on the winning side batting 100% wins right now - UNDEFEATED! You should have seen the HUGE AWESOME smile on their faces when they actually won a game for a change - IT WAS AWESOME. You think they won the lottery or something jumping up and down like they are super. Same as last year when they beat another poor shooting team by 2 points, there only win of the year, was a barn burner for sure us parents were like biting our teeth when the other team kept missing several easier shots to win the game the last few minutes of the game. Our kids were ecstatic actually winning 1 game for once. I'm not so sure many teams who loose that much would take loosing so gracefully and not get that upset by just quitting. Some of these other teams 8th grade teams though are pretty darn awesome I think they would beat a lot of high school basketball teams. When you have 7th and 8th graders over 6' tall, hard to compete when our team is all under 5'8" tall and the other team shoots 3 pointers with like almost 1/2 of them made. Plus, other teams have like 10 or more players on the team vs. our small school having only 7 (last year 6) boys to pick from on the team. Last year we had to borrow two 6th graders for a few games as well who are actually much better in terms of shooting and ball handling than all but one on my kids team to get a team together. I guess at least they all get to play well over 1/2 the entire game vs. some other schools having 10 or more basketball players and only 6-7 ever play the game. I feel sorry for the not so good players on other teams going to practice all the time and hardly ever get to play in a real game though when in fact they should be playing over 50% of the game when played against our team. A good coach would before halftime pull a lot of their starters when the score is 30-6 and let the 2nd/3rd string players play the rest of the game, especially not even in high school. Anyways, congrats on Ben kicking butt and knowing the proper way to win and not rubbing it into other people's face as I see way too often. Good kid, good dad!

Man, was a hard one to swallow tonight-8th grade boys team got spanked 64-12, was like 34-4 at half. We had to borrow 4-5 7th graders to make up the 8th grade team since 2 kids in 8th grade were out sick from school today. Made matters worse 8 of the 12 points were made by our 7th graders. The other team had like 20 kids to pick from, all either taller, faster, or excellent shooters. Hard to hold your tongue as a parent in the crowd, but like said, our kids are used to it. So much for the 1-0 winning perfect start, hoping for 1 more win this year, maybe?
