I've been by Shiprock several times in my travels and wondered about its history, I didn't realize it was on the Navaho Reservation...seeing it from the highway has a grand view.....

But the other day I saw an ariel view that made me make this post, I didn't realize how alone on the landscrape it is....

It turns out that it's the center of a volcano that the sides have fallen away, the Navaho consider it a sacret place, one of the stories go that their young men use to go there for their vision quest... the Navaho have ban climbing on the reservation land about 30 years ago due to a climbers death, I'm not even sure if you can get up close to it....  if you're ever in this area be sure to check it out, all of that area in New Mexico is interesting....good place to ride if you're looking to plan a trip.... cooldude

about 10 yrs ago Bonnie and I were in Montrose for a spell on the Valkyrie

One day we took 62 from Ridgeway Colorado to Telluride then
145 south to Delores before heading east 184 and 160 to Durango and north on 550
which you know is an awesome road

If I had known that place was so close I would have swung over

Its also due north of Gallup, a town I shall not pass thru again for a good while   Shocked

The Voai is gonna be not far from there this June I do believe

Thanks for that cool post Don !

Cool post Don. Been out to NM in a cage. My Aunt lives in Rio Rancho and there is SO much to see and do. When I can swing it, I wanna fly the wife out and head out on the bike to browse around some more. Bandalier National Monument is a cool hike to do among other things around there.

Thanks good post I stayed in NM for a week at a place called the Andrew Doss House. I loved it the beauty and quiet were just astounding. We were at the foot of the mountains and there was snow on the tops and we had the fire going and the hot tub was so relaxing.

I've been to Bandalier, that is a cool place....the ride in the park is outstanding....when we got to where the cliff dwelling are I was amazed at how those people lived, we went up the ladders into dwellings and you could still see the black smoke on the stone ceilings from where their fires were.....after seeing how they lived in the walls of the mountain, I remember saying that these people really must have been afraid of something to live back here hidden like this.... brings back memories of these trips, talking about them... Getting up all those ladders at the end to the ceremonial cave was the highlight. Had to convince the better half to go up but well worth it.  cooldude
