I ride a LOT, sometimes forced to work into dark, with a resulting night time 1 hour commute home - which I hate; deer collisions are always in the back of my mind. About once a month on my morning commute I'll see a carcass on the edge of the freeway; sometimes with the damaged car still sitting there from the night before... We have 10 acres just outside of Tucson, and on my morning walk with the canine yesterday before dawn, she went NUTS. Just on the ridgeline of our property I counted SEVEN deer. Never seen so many at one time.
Buried in the article stats: Motos represent 70% of ALL vehicle-deer casualities. Miles driven (on average) in the country between 2008 and 2010 increased 2%; while reported deer collisions increased 10X.
I hit a mid sized buck a few years ago in our Jeep about 3 miles from home on a country road doing about 30mph. Pushed in the plastic grill guard enough to tweak the AC condenser enough to release all the refrigerant; cost me $1000 to get fixed. IMHO, I wish we could kill ALL these beasts...
