Well a quick history of the bike. Bought it two years ago. Previous owner was in a slow speed crash and the forks were bent. It sat for a year since I still had the Interstate. Last year I changes out the forks and rode it around some. A lot of popping at idle and decelerating, and running rough. So after doing some research here I figured it was a vacuum leak.Checked all the screws on the intakes, ALL WERE LOOSE!. So I tightened all the loose nuts, bolt and screws. Still popping and running rough. Looked at the hoses and some looked a little worn. That was last July. I had shoulder surgery in August, so that ended the season for me early. This year although it's been warm enough to ride up in these parts for about two weeks, I figured on waiting knowing that I was going to have to solve the vacuum leak problem. So I researched the desmog. Thought I might try it one day. But alas, today wasn't that day. So, I went to my local auto parts store and picked up several feet of hose. Now, getting to work. After taking off the tank and airbox, I tried mapping out the vacuum lines. I ended up replacing the three on the left bank and the middle one on the right bank, that's the one into the tee and connects to the PAIR valve. Reassembled the bike. Turned the key. Fired right up with out even pulling on the choke. Running smooth with out any popping. And now that it's running like it should, Desmog? Maybe later. Time to ride.

I too THOUGHT about MAYBE replacing the vacuum hoses stead of a desmog. THOUGHT about it and went with the desmog. No popping and farting here either and if I ever have another Valkyrie to desmog I'll have Attic Rat or my brother-da prez-do it! But I will admit-I learned a LOT about Valkyries doing the desmog. RIDE SAFE.

all that work to replace the tubing and it'll need doing again someday
only a little bit more work to desmog (maybe 15 min. more?) and you never do it again

Well, I'd recommend replacing the other 2 on the right bank [caps]. They crack too and they're easy to do.
You'll probably find the lines you replaced are cracked. As long as they are replaced and its running good, ride it, they'll last quite a while. It takes quite a bit longer to do a complete desmog. Capping the bottom port takes some time.
Also I guess I should say that on a bike that the owner felt should stay as Honda intended I slid the valley line [ do these engines really have a valley ?] through a larger line to try and keep them away from the heat and maybe help them last longer.

I am planning on doing the desmog, but right now I want to ride. Looked at the caps, they were good, probably replace them anyway this week.

I did the Shiney de-smog by Red Eye and also installed a Pingel with a DanMarc electric shut-off....It's amazing the peace of mind I now have , not to worry about Hydrolock and with the de-smog it does seem to run better (probably eliminated any small vacuum leaks) and looks so much less cluttered...DO IT ,,you with NEVER regret it.
