Safe rooms, look up some of them on the internet they are amazing. Some of the ones on top end homes you could never break into.

The entry ports on my home (two, not counting windows) (including beefed up doors, mounts and locks)...... are distinctly Unsafe rooms for any invaders.

Those that plan ahead need a few extra shower curtains.

There have not been any break-ins, robberies, or any other crime incidents reported in the 19 years we've been in our neighborhood - 250 or so homesteads on 3-10 acre lots.  I can't imagine any crooks thinking this area has soft targets - I'd venture to say nearly all homeowners here are armed, and in this neighborhood, guns mostly not locked up - these aren't starter homes of young families with children.  Neither are they Parade of Homes wealthy targets.  This is an established neighborhood - not a new development of new homes populated with Californicating liberal emmigrants.  This state used to be solidly red, and this neighborhood still is.  Based on yard signs in the political season. Folks here have horses with western saddles and rifle scabbards.  God help any thugs who mark us as targets - I still have my "Two Blasts Joe" - approved loaded 12 gauges within easy hidden reach.  I KNOW where they are - do you, Achmed?

excellent book, written by a former green beret Don Paul.
per prison interviews 12 out of 13 burglars will leave once hearing the rack of a shotgun.
Local police and state troopers I know all say same thing, shot gun always scares them off, only showing it turns them away.

It truth, the best security is what appears outside your home; the things that make a potential burglar pass your home and pick another.  Things like lights, cameras, alarms, dogs, clear fields of view (or fields of fire), fences, locks on outbuildings, not displaying clear signs of wealth/affluence..... an overall image that this is not a soft target.

The concept is one of layered security, and it starts at the street, not inside your door.

I live alone, but if you have a family and kids, there should definitely be a plan.  Maybe a solid wood door on the master bedroom, or other centrally located room (to everyone) with a deadbolt or chair under the knob, a hard-wire phone and firearm(s), clubs, bright flashlights, electronic muffs, and a plan to defend everyone behind you at the head of the stairs, or bend in the hall, etc.
And also a plan if bad things happen and you are not home.

There have been a rash of break ins in the neighborhood my mother in law, age 73 and all alone,  lives in Madison WI.  Luckily, they caught the teenagers/low 20's kids doing it.  She has motion sensors installed and dead bolts, but anyone can get into a normal home if they really wanted to.

She is even considering those alarm companies with security activation on all windows and doors since anyone can break glass or get into most deadbolt locked doors if they really wanted to.  Pretty sad state of affairs if you live in your own home and you don't feel safe living there for fear of break ins.  If I lived in an area like that, I'd be moving somewhere else.  My co-workers live in not so trusty sections of Freeport IL,  and they don't even let their kids go outside and play.  I'd be moving to another city if that was the case.

I doubt many could afford or have the space for a safe room though in most normal sized homes.  With the way I sleep, a herd of elephants could in the middle of the night run thru my house and might not hear them.

My mom is 86, and if you break in to her home she will shoot you.... several times.

She gave up her carry permit, but not her pistola.

A true safe room yes, but anyone can beef up one room enough to slow people down to give you time to arm up and defend the doorway.

If someome breaks into my house and I have to show them my gun it will be promptly followed by several rounds to center mass. This is my abode and you do not enter without being invited for any reason. I will not rack a shell into my shotgun. It has one in the chamber and I will quietly click the safety to fire and surprise the asshole with a loud bang. My whole house is my safe room and I intend to protect it with the best of my abilities.

Just make a 2X4 like this - You would have to destroy a door to get past this, jammed behind it.  That will surely buy some time, quietly and at no cost.  I think most all bedroom doors open inward.  Maybe code, not sure.

Most burglaries occur during the day when no one is home. I've been burglarized twice in a similar manner.
I've since made my own alarm system which has not yet been 'tested'. We now always leave the house as though there is some one there, in that, lights, TV, radio ,etc are always left on and turned up. [ of course my friends think I'm nuts and just can't figure out why I do this. Of course they haven't been broken into yet]. I also have a 'Repeal the SAFE Act' sign prominently displayed on the front of the house which I think is one of the biggest deterrents to break-ins. But you have to live in New York for that to make sense.
I also keep Gold Cups where I can get at them and under the bed is an old well broken in sawed off side by side.  If someone does decide to break in while I'm there, I'm not about to take the time to 'rack' a pump gun, the time I take is to pull a trigger. Then I'll probably beat the crap out of him for causing me to have to clean up a mess.

Second guy hears the rack. While wondering what the hell just messed his shirt up.
Then he gets seconds. The garage is wired to total default burn to the ground when I leave.

I thought the same thing. but my house can't be seen from a road. So they had plenty of time to kick in the front door and help themselves. Joanne was only gone for 45 minutes.
