I live in a little community of about 40 homes (separated from other communities by a double yellow line on a road or a commercial road, so definitely not exclusive).  The residents got together and have formed a association.  There's a President, a Sec'y (not one of OSS'), a Treasurer, etc.  We mostly communicate via e-mail.  Blasé, the Pres, sends one or two informative e-mails a day about town happenings.  He recently sent the towns entire proposed schools budget.

The budget took 5 pages of line items.  First column was what the money was for.  Ex: Maintenance, Supplies, non-teaching salaries, etc.  Most were listed several times, I think because they did them by school (there are 3 schools with 2 grades each in them and the one bigger school for the middle and high school with about 5 classes in each grade).  Next column was what it cost in 2013, then 2014, then 2015, then it gave the % change for the new budget.

Glancing over the 5 pages, I noted that some of the items went up over 1000%.  Some went up 2%.  Some went down 823% while others went up 6% and another went down 85% and another went down 346%, and on and on.  Crazy % changes going up and down, and down and up.  BUT, Miraculously!!!  after all was said and done, there's only a 3% increase in the total school budget.  Imagine that!

How could that possibly be?  How could all those crazy swings in percentages end up only being a 3% increase?  uglystupid2

I'll tell you how.  They work backwards.   Cheesy  They know how much of an increase the tax payers will take without too much bitching.  They figured that 3% this year would be OK so they played with 5 pages of percentages here and there and Koboom, Mo'Money, Mo'Money, Mo'Money!

So I sent my thoughts to my fellow tax payers in an e-mail to those on the contact list by hitting reply-to-all, and have gotten no responses.  I did run into one guy in Home Depot on the weekend and he said he agreed with me.

How does the cost of something go down 823%?  I would have thought the most something could go down is 100%.  Unless something that used to cost $100 now is actually making money, and paying $723.

Gary, Yep, thats exctlly how its done. What will the public tolerate. I have a friend on a board of directors. He said after every public vote on a buget, the back room conversation was how much more was left on the table. I to don't understand the math, but in the end only the standard 3% increase.

No, you posted about what you would be getting for $48 entrance fee for a week long bike rally.  I'm talking about stealing from tax payers and how I believe they do that.

My district spends $36,000 PER KID PER YEAR.  That's $6,000 more than the next most expensive and more than twice the national average.  And my share is $7,000 a year on top of private school tuition because the school system stinks.  Not even in the top half within the county.

If you can really equate the two, then you do deserve that reward.

You are correct.  looked at the thing agains since I didn't believe you that nothing could decrease more than 100%  Cheesy

And an awful lot of things went down 100% in order to make up for the 1150% increase in supplies (not otherwise specified).  Down 100%?  If we don't them this year, then what did we need them for last year?

Dr. Gary, my prediction is that you'll bat right at .500 on your expectations.   Wink  Spend a little more money.  It won't help your average, but it'll assist in our financial status.   Smiley

Oh I spent.  Bought all sorts of raffle tickets up front, cause I know my money will go to a good cause and a large time.  And I always get suckered into buying more tickets each night, which adds even more to our fun.  Plus we're on vacation, and the Queen and I don't hold back while on vacation.  We even got a KING sized bed to go with our Kingboy seats!  Yes, sir, we're big spenders.  Just don't like others spending my money that aren't really good at it.

You're right, money is money.  You worry about how you're gonna spend $10 a day and I'll worry about how someone else is gonna spend my $7,000 annually, increasing every year.  Definitely an equal arrangement.  Were even, Steven.

You know something, I apologize.  Didn't realize a picture of a silly trophy would insult you so much.  I've given and gotten soooooooooooo much worse on this biker board (it is still a biker board, right?).  If I offended you, I'll buy the first beer.  And any road I get on, is definitely the road to ride and the one I WANT to be on.  Peace, brother.

The numbers sounds right. If you have a budget line for computers and spend $50.00 on ink one year but the next year you buy a $500 laptop that's a 1000% increase. The smaller the agency the bigger the swing in costs as one or two expenses can really effect the budget.
