Seniors remove valve stems from buses in senior prank.

What I do not understand is the cost.  District says the cost for repairs will be in the "thousands".

Excuse me.  THOUSANDS of dollars to screw in about 130 valve cores?  THOUSANDS.  REALLY?  They say stems, but I assume valve cores.

How do they come up with cost in the THOUSANDS? If available, use the old cores.  If not, probably $1.00 each. Ooops. $1.23.  http://www.tooltopia.com/milton-s404.aspx?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=paid_search_google_pla&scid=scplp6821096&gclid=CL_H-pCMt8UCFQEEaQodCxQAig

Add in 2-3 man hours with truck to air them all back up.  I could see HUNDREDS, but THOUSANDS?

"The cost to repair the tires hasn’t been tallied but will be in the thousands, according to the district. -"

Must be a big school district and has a thousand buses.  Smiley  . Probably many of the cores can be tightened back up.  It seems whenever any kind of municipal project comes up, no matter how simple, common sense flies out the window.

It could be expensive if the stems were ruined/cut or someone decided to drive the buses. After-al those tires would only be flat on the bottom.   Smiley

Seems harsh to me, they could have cut them off a lot faster and caused way more damage.  That would be vandalism, To me they are guilty of a prank.  Hoser  ???

The losses probably include the loss of the school day and field trip that was canceled.

They said that was just for the cost of the repairs to the tires.

Yup took a second here also 2funny

Damage should be minimal I would say 300.00 provided the school has a shop that works on their buses and they only removed the valve. But if they cut off the tire stems then yes it could be thousands. Initial shock and not knowing whats involved could be to blame for the inflated price. But to Remove, Dismount and mount and install all those tires.  Each tire could easily run 100.00 with labor to change them and install new stems. I hope this is not the case but either way it seems they are going for blood in that the kids will have a life long record maybe even a felony if they can put damages high enough to qualify.

The weight of the bus on the sidewall of the flattened tire could ruin the cord/belts on them as well. Angry
Idiot kids, find them (somebody will rat out the little ...sterds) and make mommy and daddy pay the fare instead of taking it out of the taxpayers pockets.  Give'em a pointy stick and turn them down the road for about 10 miles picking up trash, dirty diapers, and exploding trucker urine "bombs" on a hot July day.

Prank, my .ss.; that would have been one bus, not a whole fleet.

As long as they were not driven on, which I doubt, I have NEVER heard of damage to the tire from going flat sitting still.

hold all the little pranksters back 1 year from graduating, that will surely make them learn their lesson.

At the very least, divide up the repair costs to each kid and make their family pay their fair share equally across the board.

1-2 buses fine, but that many deserves a major fine and punishment.

Heck, the worst we ever did was pull the fire alarms or move teachers smaller cars with 5-8 guys lifting them up in the parking lot and moving them somewhere else.  We got one pinned in sideways so bad it was mere inches away from the other parked cars on each side of the car having to get 1 of the 2 cars to move to get out.

The story was ambitious.  I took it as they removed the valve cores, although it said "removed stems".  You cannot remove stems.

IF they cut the stems off, then, to me, that crossed a MUCH brighter line.  That would have caused thousands of dollars of damage, as each tire would need to be removed, new stem installed, and reinstalled.    6 tires and 24 busses would be 144 tires, if all flattened.  At $30 each, that would be $4200.

However, if the cores were removed, should not be more than $500 damage to the busses, as the story talked about.

I just think FELONY charges are overboard.

Heck, Pestorious was convicted of MURDER in Australia, and they are saying he will be out shortly, 10 months.  They want 6 months for this?  6 months for valve cores, 10 months for murder?

well in the first place all stems are metal so they would have to work there ass off to break the stems off so i would say they removed the cores and the rears are harder to get to yet  2000 would cover it.

Any time a school bus tire goes flat it has to be removed  and inspected.

The distance from prank to vandalism is a short hop.
Soaping windows, prank. debilitating a district vehicle, vandalism.
Holding the little angels back a year is one GED away from being a waste of time.
Parents paying,,,, $10.00 a month for the rest of little Johnny's life, or until they get tired of it.
1 year federal time, closer, but then they graduate from crime school and you have a customer for life.
Pillory,,wouldnt that be great.
Put the crevasse back into accountability.
----good---V------bad-------very baaaad----
Summers gone, pick up trash along the hiway, wash busses, maintenance the school.
Free labor,,, I see a new water main going to the gym.

I think I forgot just how fussy they are over school bus inspections. Maybe those tires will be removed and looked at, or replaced, even though they weren't driven on while flat. If other states are like mine, these inspections are very 'fussy'.
