How does the train engineer get that far over the speed limit ? Seems like he must have just given it throttle and forgot about it. It's amazing more weren't killed in this accident. I will pray for all the families.

A blood test is in order.

I don't know that much about it, but riding the DC metro for 18 years... I thought there were a bunch of computer controls in place.... governors, alarms, and such.

This place didn't have that speed control thingy, but of course they are pushing for it now.

The engineer was released from the hospital, went to Philly Detectives, chose not to give a statement and left with his lawyer. That is the latest.

actually right before the curve the train will normally be doing 80 mph and suppose to slow down to 50 going into the curve. so at 106 the train was doing 26 over the 80 limit but didn't slow to 50 as required.
initial black box shows he hit the emergency brakes and was doing 102 mph into the curve verses the required 50, 52 mph over the limit.
this was from the top govt official meeting late afternoon.
remember 1 or 2 yrs ago tug boat captain was on cell and laptop and hit a duck boat and killed a few in the delaware river.
maybe same here cell/ipad this pad whatever they are calling them this wk.

When I saw this before I sez ta myself-self-did they draw blood and get a breathalyzer? IF they DID NOT they SHOULD have!  uglystupid2 Did they check his cell phone or laptop? All the control cab crew should have been checked at the scene. Had that been a truck or bus driver you have no choice-they WILL draw blood and they WILL administer a breathalyzer. RIDE SAFE.

Drunk and passed out, bet cha.  Won't take a blood/breathalyzer test, and his corrupt union will protect him.  To Hell with the 7 dead.  That's how our Federal Government works.  AmTrack has never had a profitable quarter in it's history, and was supposed to be profitable and self sustaining after three years. Another pitiful example of where the Government should not be, running what should be a private enterprise.  No different than the VA.

Reports say he turned over his phone and also had blood tests done and given to investigators. As far as govt. subsidies. We have them in every industry. Oil, Agriculture , etc. Hell we even subsidize home ownership.

106 mph in a 50 mph zone...........I'm guilty.....ha.    No, seriously......You would think that Amtrack would have some sort of warning signal taht would go off if you entered a curve too fast......kind of like the planes do if they are going to slow.......

The FBI is now also looking at this matter.
The train was going 70 mph in the 80 mph area and for some reason accelerated to 107 mph. Apparently for some reason this speed wasn't noticed until too late and by the time the brake was applied the train was going 102 mph in the 50 mph area.
Some are trying to say the train accelerated immediately, I'd sure like to know how a train does that. I think physics would come into this somewhere.
Now it is being looked into that something hit and went thru the windscreen and may have somehow caused the acceleration.
