Halogen Bulbs in rear turn signals?

I like a lot of light on the rear of my 03 Valk standard.  I've found 50 watt halogen bulbs to replace the original turn signal bulbs.  I have a signal minder that lets the rear turn signals light up constantly at half brightness as tail lights and full brightness as turn signals.  Can the electrical system handle the increased wattage and will they halogen bulbs get too hot to use for this application?  Thanks for any help!

I would advise against using high-wattage halogens. Not so much due to the wiring (which MIGHT be up to the task) but due to the fact you'll likely melt the housings and the lenses due to the extra heat.

Some of the members ran into this problem "back in the day" when the bikes were new.

Look into a high-brightness LED solution, like a Cree-based 1156 in red.

+1 on LED, brighter, draw less. Search here 1156 red or amber.

Tundra, those puppies plug & play?  No messing around, just put em in?

No, LED compatible flasher needed to prevent hyper flash, $12 at your local auto parts store.

They don't tell you that, local auto parts store.

Though so, but had to ask just in case they invented some new stuff.

Thanks.

Tundra, quick question.I just looked and saw that the amber and white ones come with a 50w resister.Isn't that going to compensate so there is no hyperflash?

Yes. It has to be wired/soldered and you need to find somewhere to hide it.

Tundra, thanks.I guess it would be easier to just get a new flasher

Correct a new flasher is plug and play. The resistor just puts the current drain back up to the same as a conventional bulb plus it gets hot and so needs to be put somewhere appropriate.

I got rear LED bulbs in the signals and did not change the flasher or add a resistor.  Yes it flashes a bit faster, but  I kind of liked the fast flash, it catches your eyes quicker.
