To be good, and to do good, is all we have to do.

I just arrived in Phoenix, checked into my hotel, and  washed the bugs off my bike. I'm riding back to the hotel wearing jeans and a green Sprite t-shirt when a guy on a HD (no patches) rides along side me and stars me down. I'm not liking what is going on so I try to loose him by making a quick left turn, but he dangerously cuts through traffic to follow me. Still staring me down, I slow down to 5mph and so does he. Eventually cars are piling up behind us and start to honk, and finally the guy speeds off.

I have never experienced anything like this before. Is there anything that I don't know about riding alone in Phoenix that I should know?

Depending on what side of town you were on, anglo/latino, and what race you are could have been a factor.
It doesn't take any reason these days to piss off a psycho. Shocked

I'm a 7-Up guy myself...  Roll Eyes

I've stayed and passed through there a handful of times and so far no issues.

Maybe he spied your CO plates and was hoping for some of your legal recreational/medicinal herb?   Wink

Josh. I live here and ride daily. Sorry you had this experience. Never had that happen to me. Must be an isolated incident. BTW: In AZ, open carry is legal. You would be amazed at the lack of tailgaters on freeways when they can see it on your hip.

I was going to say, I've been riding in the Phoenix area for years and never had such an issue.  Could be mistaken identity.  He may have thought you were Sandy.

Should of asked him what his problem was. At 5 mph he could clearly hear you ask WTF? But thats just me, I dont have much patience for being harassed. Maybe he was just checking out the bike but was too chicken to stop and talk about it because he is a Harley tough guy.

Probably never seen a real motorcycle before. Lived in Prescott for nine years and never had that problem. Only trouble came from truckers on I-17 up out of Phoenix. First time was two truckers holding up traffic side by side and blocking me from passing and another empty flat bed truck chasing my friends and I up hill on I-17. we had to break triple digits to leave him behind. Didn't know what his intentions were and didn't want to find out.

Josh, that was definitely an isolated incident.  While I wouldn't cruise Van Buren Street in the late evening, I have never experienced what you did today.  Do not let it worry you.

I'd be more concerned about staying hydrated while riding in Phoenix between now and October.

And riding with Sandy.

Is there a motorcycle gang in Phoenix named the Sprites?

Maybe Oss is right and he's from the 7 Up's and he thought you where on his turf.   Grin

Big anti Islam biker rally there on Friday. Supposed to have been quite a few 1%'s there. Guy probably couldn't believe how awesome a non Harley could look! Your's may have been the first Valk he'd ever seen. Might have pissed him off that your Valk looked meaner than his hog. Roll Eyes

I wear a big full beard.  Now it would have been a first but the guy could have thought I was Muslim. With the recent rally in town maybe he is overly sensative?

I'm thinking the negatives are more numerous than the positives, to OC.  So I never do it.  But getting more respect on a crowded highway, might be one of the positives and I have considered removing my cover garment more than once.  Funny that it gets ragers and tailgaters to back off.  Frankly I wouldn't want to have to use it while riding.  And cagers are likely unaware that using a handgun while riding, particularly right handed, is very difficult if not impossible.  If a biker pulled a gun on me while in my cage, I would just take it as a threat on my life and ram him off his bike.  Problem solved.

I think you just stumbled upon a benefit of being left handed, which I am.

Most are all myths.

Motorcycle riding has a lot of negatives. It doesn't make it wrong to ride one.  coolsmiley
