Another piece of history thats being forgotten. Thanks for posting this. 
Before lights, fires were manned for a number of years during the early days of night flight.
Pennsylvania was known as the pilots grave yard during those years.
I still have some of my grandfathers and fathers Radio Range charts. Flying sure was different in those days.

Have one to go see here in the Sho Me. NOT a Pilot or a Navigator BUT I have seat time lookin at junks and sampans. AND the A/C I was in killed a few of those boats. Early anything is always interesting to me.  cooldude RIDE SAFE

I've known about this for quite a long time and actually took the time and effort to find and land on one in a Army helicopter in Kansas once.   Considering what was available for navigation way back when, those were some daring men in their flying machines.
