So if you run a Windows system and update regularly, you may notice a nice new icon in your system tray. Free Windows 10!!!! Just sign up and it is all yours as soon as Microsoft gets around to finishing it. There is an old saying about getting what you pay for and I highly recommend doing a little research about 10 before you allow Microsoft to load their newest and shiniest operating system onto your machine. For one thing, on the free version, you will have no control over updates so MS can update whatever they wish on YOUR computer.
Oh, you want to get rid of that cute new icon? You have to uninstall Microsoft updates KB3035583 and KB2952664 (both supposedly are system updates, one optional and the other important), then hide the updates when they reappear in the update list. Updates are now advertisements it seems.

sort of like going from older versions of Excel/Word which I preferred to the newer versions always adding new icons up top (especially Excel) that I will never use making it more confusing and wasting my time as well as new Word doing stuff all on it's own thinking you will like it and then having to spend 5x's as long to undo what Word did automatically for you.  At times in Word, I just wish I had my old IBM high school typewriter would be quicker at times.

I run Windows 7 on several of my machines, and it seem to run OK! When will people understand that, " If it is not broke, don't fix it".

I still use XP on my other computer and wish it was on this one.

I'm going to install 10 on an old laptop that has 7 on it already. This computer has 8.1 and am going to leave it alone for now. I actually like 8.1, and have no problems, except for a bad driver that was automatically downloaded by the program that uses it. I had to re-install the original software to get rid of it. I never used the program that used the driver anyway.. cooldude

I've been running Windows 10 (insider edition) for months now on my Surface Pro 3.  I like it a lot.  Much better than Windows 8 and has more functionality than Windows 7.  They still have a few kinks to work out but I haven't noticed anything that has affected me.

Five of my computers have Win7, and tried to reserve them for Win10, an App/Icon is suppose to show up, if I have Sp1, which they all have and based on their requirements I have. None of them show the App, am I missing something, my Surface Pro3 shows the App/Icon but can't get the Win7's machines to get it. Has anyone with Win7 machines have success. I have got to be doing something wrong.

When we had XP, and wanted to go to Win7, they had an Advisor setup program, do they have a type of  check my PC download for Win7 to Win10?

I have 7 Pro on this computer (my desktop).....it just started showing the little window thingy down in the task/tool bar thingy at the bottom/right of the screen just this morning.  Haven't seen anything on the laptop with 8.1 yet....but still waiting.

The other laptop is still on XP and I'm just gonna leave that one alone for now.  It doesn't get used for much other than a few music programs and music files that I use for putting tunes on my mp3 players.  The programs I use on that laptop won't work on Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 or anything else they've come out with.

Plan on updating to 10 on both the 7 Pro desktop and the 8.1 laptop.

Edit:

Just checked the laptop with 8.1 and it has the little windows flag icon thing in the task bar now.  Just reserved 10 on both the 7 pro desktop and the 8.1 laptop.  Supposed to be out July 29.

Like many I have the insider addition of 10 on one system. When you have several systems on a network linked to servers, you tend to pay attention to what the new operating systems are going to cost you if you decide to upgrade. After an update on the 10 system, that one laptop could no longer see the network. It happens when running beta software so I did not get terribly excited until I was informed by the MS people that they had just given me their home use version (incomplete, no network support) when I am supposed to be using business class software and I would have to pay to get Pro or Enterprise if I wished to be able to control my own network and updates. I have no problems with Windows 10 as an operating system, more with Microsoft telling me what I can or can not do on my own machines. There are about 7 planned versions of Windows 10 depending on your tablet, phone, or computer capabilities. For my use, the free version will be like the Vista Home version, worse than what I am already using.

Linux is great if you are not trying to run AutoCAD or 20/20. My server runs a mandravian variant of linux, but it only stores files and can't execute them. Some CAD libraries are rather large.

I know Linux is an OS, and in many cases faster and simpler. So basically what type of computing is it good for, like general and nothing advanced. I recall back in the beginning days of Linux guys in my dept. got it, and always seem to have issues getting it to run smooth. So it always turn me off, like Apple did.  But I was always curious about Linux, to me Windows was enough of a hair puller, I kind of like the DOS days, in a way it seem simpler to solve ones issues. So what is the short story of Linux.

Still didn't figure out why, I didn't get the reserve flag on all my 5,  Win7 machines. If at least one had the flag on I would say OK, and try and figure out what is lacking, but none have the flag. And I don't have a clue yet.  ????????. I'll get it!!  I wish Win10 had an analyzing program to let you know what you need to run Win10. Odd!! they did for Win7, but not for Win10

If you have Win7, has anyone submitted  and reserved a Win10. If you have reserved for Win10 and got conformation back, have you noticed anything different with your system? Primarily with image preview icon in folders. Such as the icon not previewing the picture.  Or noticed anything else different, nothing bad, just different.

Think I'll give it 6-9 months out in the real world testers before or if I commit. Have one desktop win 7 and two laptops running  win 8.1 that I have configured to be like win 7, almost.  Smiley

I have Windows 7 Pro on my desktop 'puter.  Have a confirmation on my reserved Windows 10.

I haven't noticed anything different....about anything.

Something odd happened to my computer, before, when I went to look at picture folder and the icons are med or large it would show a preview if the pic. Now it only shows a graphic instead of the pic. I checked two other computer that have Win7 and they are the same. couldn't check the other two computers because I am rebuilding them. I was just trying to think back what I could have changed, that may have cause that problem, the only thing they have in common is they were reserved for Win10 and confirmed. Just brain storming!!! Thanks!!!

When you open windows explorer in the upper right hand corner you will see "options" . Click in that and select what size picture you want to see with the sliding bar.

I have Win7 and don't see anything like that, just a house, star and a gear, which is tools, but it all relates to Explorer.  My issues is in the folders on the "C"/"D" drive not the internet. Every thing else is normal, browser, internet, programs have images, pictures as normal. But when I go into a folder and set the file, which may be a picture to large icon, it don't preview the picture in that file, just a windows graphic image. Every thing else is normal from what I can see. Thanks for your help!!!

I did some playing, and I think what you were referring to, is Library rather than Windows Explorer.  Any ways I tried that and no go, the odd thing is it is on all three computers, not just one!! Thanks again!!

Finally figured it out, and got the thumbnails back, when reserving for Win10, you must set updates to auto, I assumed it update it automatically, and changed the settings. Because I never set those functions.

Windows Explorer is the file icon at the bottom left next to the start menu (usually), Internet Explorer is a web browser. If you open a file/folder in Windows Explorer, then click on view (top panel menu), it will give you the option to see icons, large or small, list, etc anytime that folder is opened. Some updates will reset the view to default (large icons) for whatever reason.

I found the bottleneck elsewhere, just in case that won’t work, try this. I finally figured it out, about the no Thumbnail preview in the folder files.  And I think I figured out how it happened, In Win7 when you reserve for Win10 your update must be in automatic update.  Which during a update checked a box in one of the menus.
I had to click on the folder icon on the lower left, which puts you in the folder [library], at the upper left click on the [Organize] button. When it opens go down to [folder and search options] and click on it and when Folder Options open up and you see tabs and click on the [View] tab and where is says [Files and Folders] just below that title it says [Always show icons, never show Thumbnails] uncheck it, click on Apply, then OK and you are set.
