I've just reposted some items on my local Craigslist.

In the recent past I've received some replies and have again today in this type of wording

Hello, Can i come to your place to take a look of this item, I have to work until 8pm tonight, and work from 11am to 9pm Wednesday until Thursday. I may be able to meet you on Friday afternoon or Saturday, Let me know if that work for you, Reply back at breedbee01@gmail.com

Are they just harvesting email/phone numbers for spamming or do you think this is the first step to trying to build a profile? The next step being to get my name and address and then........???

I've replied in the past via Craigslist with just my phone number and no one calls.

I never use the phone for actual phone calls if I can avoid it, if I'm buying something on Craigslist I'l usually communicate with just my e-mail address unless the seller specifically requests a phone number...

Britman,

I think that is exactly what they are doing. I've had several items for sale at a time and have had the same kind of response to both adds. If my item isn't specified in the response I don't reply. If you notice the response you had is generic and can be a response to anything that is for sale. "item"

Yeah I had all kinds of these scam type emails when I sold my VTX. If anybody asked me to reply to anything other than a phone number I didn't bother.  Got so annoyed with the nonsense that I ended up taking it to a consignment dealer. Makes you wonder why these people have nothing better to do?!!

I just went through dozens of these contacts, while trying to sell a bike on CL. Basically, they are automated "fishing" responses from overseas scammers. If you do reply with interest, they subsequently say, "my plans changed, but I want your item and MY AGENT will arrange payment." They then propose sending their agent with a cashier's check (fake) for more money than you are asking. They claim the extra is to ship the item to them AND to give you some extra cash for your troubles.
If you fall for this, they get your item, the extra cash from the fake check for "shipping." And you get a call from your bank in two days time saying the check was no good.
I usually delete all such contacts. But sometimes I have fun with them, telling them the address of the DA's office, or, offering to meet their agent at the local police station, so that they can feel safe. Funny. As soon as police or authorities are mentioned, the contacting site instantly vanishes!
