Question to anyone willing to answer it:
When I first started riding back in "71", people used to signal on coming bikers by extending their arms in some kind of wave.
For some reason, I recall that sign more directed to Harley riders and those of us riding Hondas felt timid offering it.
Fast forward 45 years or so, I just started riding again after a long break, today many riders seem to offering similar gestures. What exactly is the meaning, is it just a simple good will gesture to anyone on a bike, is it a reminder to be safe or something else?
I also noticed some people just ride by without any signals - mostly Harley's. I don't wave to passing cars or trucks when I'm in the like.
So, it makes me wonder if people are making some kind of unified statement or ar we doing it because we feel some kind of obligation to do so?
Your feedback is appreciated.

Yep... that's about my reason also. Kinda like saying, "Hey man... glad you're enjoying the wind as much as I am."

Biker wave = Solidarity, friend in the wind. I do it and old skool hot rodders are doing it more & more, as a lot of us ride.
Tap Tap Tap on top of helmet = Po Po.

Old man, if you're getting the finger pointed down it is a reminder that that pavement you're riding on is hard so be careful. Also, it doesn't look manly to wave all friendly like. Kinda like in the olden days when Honda was just coming into its own and "You meet the nicest people on a Honda" was their motto. Kinda faggy (not that there's anything wrong with that). The low wave is the "cool" wave. Anybody wanna rebut?

It's just an acknowledgement of the fellow rider.
But signart is correct.....tap tap tap on top of the head/helmet means there's a cop nearby....usually meaning they're sitting on the side of the road with their radar.

Just an acknowledgement that we share the wind in common. Sort of comradery. Other specific rides do it too. I owned a Jeep Wrangler for many years and they also have the "two fingers up" from the steering wheel on the way by. (And I don't mean one on each hand ) Of course, if you're driving down the road in your Ford Taurus... you won't get a wave from other Ford Taurus'... but certain makes have the same kind of "cult" wave of some sort. Vettes come to mind.

It seems to me the first time I became aware of riders 'waving' to each other was a raised reversed fist then later came the peace symbol.
Heck my normal wave to anyone is the 'Forest wave', still cracks up most folks.

I just do it to acknowledge a brother of the wind.
Ditto (& the helmet tap actually means "headz up", could be anything, cops, wreck, down tree, high water, elk crossing, etc. etc., means slow down & be alert.)

That's what I love about this site, I can ask what seems to be the dumbest question and still get good advice. Thanks for responding, the Hello Kitty is what I'm going for - then run and hide.
