You'll get a lot of different answers... I hate cut piggies... other folks aren't
happy until they cut the piggies and drill out all the baffles... Cobra pipes
are louder and probably reduce horsepower, but some folks like them so
much they wouldn't ride to the mailbox without them...

Some bikes just sound awful when made loud. If you like louder, though,
our awesome motors sound like race cars when they're loud...

The best mod is the glasspack with truck stacks.  Best sounding, best looking, and best value for the buck.  Cutting piggies doesn't do much, and  if you do it leave enough stub to replace them.  Neither one requires any tuning adjustments.

Your stock oem exhaust is ONLY STOCK ONCE.  They don't make anymore of them.

AND....once you start with cutting the pigs off you'll start to get drone.

Search for cutting piggies and drone...or droning.  Do A LOT of reading before you do anything.

This motor sounds great with cut piggies and stacks, sorta like a street rod... but...at highway speeds with a helmet on, the drone was unbearable for me........I tried the no drone cones and they helped a little but not enough to satisfy my mental well being.
I went back to piggies with stock tips.  No drone and oh so quiet.
I can hear the inner workings of the motor, tranny etc much better now.

You can cut your piggies then put them back on...if you do a little planning.  I believe the piggies are 1/2" OD so if you get some 1/2" brass couplings and know how to sweat pipes (Heat the fitting with a torch, touch the solder to the joint, watch it get sucked in), you can put them back on.  Leave enough of the piggies to attach the coupling, give it a try, if you don't like...then re-attach...back to (close anyway) OEM.

I love my cut piggies. What is this drone you speak of?
Barks under load and shuts up at speed.
I want to do the glasspack mod, but I wanna get other pipes first.

My girl had  the piggies cut flush to the baffles when I got her. I never noticed the drone until I was going through helmet required States recently. Now I am thinking of replacing the piggies wirh Mark T's adaptor plates. Or just replacing with the truck stacks since it seems I can't go back to the stock exhaust.

I cut the pigs short, then off, then drilled rear baffles, then "Ragnar'd" the rear baffles (removed them completely) & still didn't like the sound. Too "rappy" & high pitched. Felt the same way about glass packs, too "italian sport car" for my ear sooooooo..............
I cut 7.5 inches off the rear of the exhaust cans, notched a set of 4" truckstacks to fit around the mounting brackets, soaped 'em up good & drove 'em all the way up under the forward covers with a block of wood & a BFH!
Sound was Bad Azz!! More like stock car than sports car BUT................
we never wear full helmets, always "peanuts" if any at all. No drone problem with half shell helmets.
I gotta pull that exhaust off the wrecked IS & see if it survived the crash. Damn I miss that sound!

I cut the rear baffle completly off and then the can flush with the front baffle. tig welded my truck stacks onto what was left of the cans and added a set of grumpys tips. Everyone says they love the sound. I kept my rear baffles so I can slide them back in on long trips to quiet it down. Glass packs were just annoying to me.

Red,

I have only cut one off where I was concerned about putting the piggies back on...but never did.  You want to have about 2" of pipe left on the muffler when you cut them off.  This will change the sound enough to make it noticeable.  The extra sound comes from reverberating around in the rear cover.  You may want to mark the piggies to where they came off of.  The order will make a difference when putting them back on as they have to line up right in the rear cover.  Numbers in Sharpie should be good enough...mark both the piggie and the muffler.

On the one that I cut...I ended up converting them over to glass packs and truck stacks.  So...I have a set of piggies with no place to put them.  Grin

I dont really hear a drone and I always wear full face.
Either way, the only thing I find annoying about the Valk, is reaching the destination.

Hey Mike, your new Valk looks nice, I might get your old fairing painted to match soon, project has been long in completing. Now on the the piggy question ...

My 98 has piggies cut off flush, rear and front baffles drilled completely out, truck stacks extended past rear fender. Great sound and no drone, but the carbs were re-jetted to keep things running just right, not sure of the exact details as the previous owner did the changes but it did require a long drill bit extension to reach the front baffles. The sound is aggressive when you get on the throttle hard but mild when just motoring along. I prefer this to the ragnar cut method, does not have the excessive raspiness. I have ridden with guys who have the 6 into 6 pipes and they were too loud, I enjoy hearing my fairing mounted speakers on long rides. Many opinions and options but as mentioned, once done it is hard to go back.

I rarely hear a drone on my completely removed piggies with 18" Air Flow flat cut tips.  But on the way home from NC, on the freeway, they droned something fierce (half DOT helmet, no ear cover) and bugged me a lot.  I have developed a vacuum leak somewhere, and I don't know if that could contribute.  Half way home it pretty much disappeared (same speeds), and I am not losing my hearing.  It had never happened (to that extent) before.  (Jersey walls will make it increase/more noticeable, but none on my ride home)

Wa-woo, waa-wooo.... continuously speeding up and slowing down in frequency.

Biggest mistake I made with my Valkyrie was cutting the piggies. The drone is terrible. I went with glass packs but wish I left well enough alone. Quiet is good.

Drone might not affect everyone.  However, if it does you, it WILL drive you nuts.  If it doesn't, then good for you....you're hearing is still good.

It does seem (from reading posts over the years) to effect more people with some level of hearing loss and/or those with tinnitus.
