A very very very long read. But a very very very good read.
Justice Scalia delivered the opinion of the Court in the Heller case.
He makes the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution pretty clear with plenty of supporting references. Those who claim that it applies to the military are at best ignorant, and at worst disingenuous. They either don't understand what "the militia," in the prefatory clause of the amendment means, or purposely ascribe a false meaning. Justice Scalia leaves little room for doubt.

It is an excellent precedent landmark decision.

That's the good news.

The bad news is, the decision was 5-4.

I did not do so, but you often get a better understanding of the enemies of the people (and Constitution) by reading the dissenting opinion(s).

I considered that, and may yet do so. It just gets my blood pressure up though.

Good decision by 5.  poor decision by 4.  Plenty of other countries for them to reside.

My best friend, who is a liberal, says that when the constitution was written 250 years ago, they didn't have automatic or semi automatic weapons. If they had then, they wouldn't have been so apt to write the second amendment. I tell him every liberal I know stands behind the 1st amendment, and wants to take away the second. I tell him if the founding fathers ever saw TV shows, the profanity, people walking around with hardly any clothes on., the first amendment might be different. We have been arguing now since Obama has become president. At the end of the day we are still best friends, and always will be, but the way I see it. If I can't convince him, I'm not even going to try to convince others. The second amendment should be left alone. If not, then we need to think about changing some of the first. They go hand in hand!

In the revolution, we used rifled barrel Kentucky (actually Pennsylvania) rifles with great effect at longer distances than the British Brown Bess smooth bores.  They planned to march abreast, shoot en mass without much aiming, they charge forward with bayonets.  We planned to hide behind rocks and trees, and ambush, and shoot from cover with aimed fire.  If Geo Washington could have had AR16s and belt fed machine guns, you bet he would have used them, and they would have been meant for inclusion in the 2d Amendment.
