Kidney stone just showed up on my left side.  Shocked  I had one a year ago and thought I forgot how much fun this is! They went in and fetched the last one.  crazy2   I hope I can do this one myself.

That sucks.  Pump fluids, do drugs (if you have any).

I had one some 15 years ago.  They say once you have one, you'll probably have more.  Fok that!!  So far so good.

Ouch.....last year I must not have been eating or drinking right and one week I popped out a kidney stone every other day for 8 days, 4 stones in just over a week.

I can usually tell whe one is coming up on me by urine color or back pain, and then I pump fluids, water and an occasional beer, to push it on thru.

Drink plenty of fluids....

I drink more water than I ever have since the first. I have Sarcoidosis and it produces calcium. Urologist says that is the culprit?? I went to his office this morning to set up an appointment and he is on vacation this week.   Undecided  I'm in my office praying for no fire calls and drinking water.
I hate pills but I have resorted to Ibuprofen and it helps take the edge off. I have Norco at home but don't like it. I don't wish these things on anyone!

After being plagued by stones, one even put me in the hospital for a week, my urologist put me on Allopurinol. It's 100mg twice a day, I haven't had a stone in seven years. I don't like taking meds either but have reached the age where it sometimes is necessary. In the case of the Allopurinol, I believe it's something given to combat gout which is (I'm told) made up of the same stuff as the stones in many cases. Regardless, it works and I'm sooooo thankful.

I take simple 250mg Magnesium.  (which absorbs calcium and/or assists in passing it)

It's been a while since I was at the med books, but believe the vast majority of stones are calcium, but there are a few other rare stones that are not calcium, but something else.  This is why the medicos like you to pee thru the filter so your stone can be sent to the lab.  If it is other than calcium, the calcium remedies are not helpful.

I won't take a multivitamin with calcium, and that is about all of them.

Is the stone giving any problems ?  Do you know where its located ?

Reason I ask, long story. I was having no problems at all when I went for an annual physical. The urine test said I blood in it, I said no and 3 others said the same. I insisted they mixed up the test.
Anyway was talked into a scan. They found big stones in both kidneys that were wedges way down in the bottom and could not have ever fit in the ureter. They convinced to have one blasted [ they will not blast both at the same time].
They blasted it and turned me loose telling to come back in a week. About midnight I started into the worse 4 days of my life. I have 29 broken bones, back broken in 4 places, broken neck, been shot and they are nothing compared to the those pieces of stone. I had to lay on the steps pushing the pieces from the kidney to the bladder, soaking bath towels from sweat and shaking as though I was going to fall apart. 4 solid days.
Once the pieces got into the bladder I thought things were going to get worse. But they [ about 30] came out without any issue. Some pieces close to the size of a BB and almost as sharp as a razor.
The surgeon asked why I tried to be a hero and not call for some super-duper meds. I just said he/you turned me loose and should have known what I was going to go through.
He wanted me back in a month for the other one. I laughed at him. I said he could cut it out to which he said they can't do that, they have to blast. I got up and walked out saying you'll never see me again. As far as I know that other stone is resting down in the bottom of that other kidney and can stay there forever as far as I'm concerned.
I'm just letting you know what can happen.

First time I had stones I begged my wife to just shoot me. They put me out and blasted them up and put a tube up me so i could pass them without pain, then 2 weeks later put me out again to take out the tube. Said I had too much calcium and needed more water. I then told them about the gout. They put me on Allopurinol and I was on that for 4 years with no problems. Then the 5th year the whole scenario repeated itself. This time I went to a specialist and he told me to cut my meat intake in half and drink 2 quarts of water a day. On my own I started drinking a glass of cranberry juice every morning, Been 10 years of doing this and no medication. I got used to eating less meat and actually enjoy it more. It beats alternatives and I hate taking pills. Of course my homebrew rhubarb raspberry wine helps too.  cooldude

Criminy, that's a horror story.

My normal one was a long painful ordeal.  The intensity ramps up and doesn't quit.

I wouldn't have gone back either.  Hey, how was that kick in the nuts? Want another?

Strange, I've had three of mine blasted a few months apart. Never had the problems you're talking about Patrick....they simply passed in pieces over the next few hours. After the hospital stay I had a stent in place for two months, now that was an ordeal to be reckoned with. You can't do anything but sit on your ass for the entire time. When they finally removed it, they just squirted some stuff in the "one eye"  as a painkiller, the dr. then inserted a tiny scope while the nurse moved things around so he could grab it. I never felt a thing when it came out but sure felt great afterward....no pain from the stent.

I had a stent put in after they removed the first one. I pulled it out after 5 days. Now, there was an experience! Then there was that long cat gut that was present for 5 days with a knot in it. That damn thing was very annoying! But when I pulled that long blue rubbber critter with a curley "Q" on both ends out from my kidney down the ureter to my bladder I was amazed it was all in there! Like I said before: I wouldn't wish this on anyone. Well wait, maybe one or two people... Evil

Six weeks of agony with a stone. They went in to blast it and couldn't  find it. Said it was gone  That night back to emergency in pain. Second look it was still there' Another surgery to blast it meanwhile I had a stent in for two weeks. After three emergency visits the stone was gone. Back to the stent. OH Crap. He said put your feet into the stirrups ( I knew I was in trouble). Felt like he used one of them tools a mechanic uses to retrieve a lost nut in an engine. He removed a stent about a foot long and about three inches in diameter, at least it felt like that. Last time into emergency my blood pressure was 50 over something, I don't really know. I was all f--k up. from pain and dope. I don't drink Coke or Pepsi any more. Ice tea, lemonade ,fruit juice and water. Hope I never go through that again. SIX WEEKS OF PAIN.

Boy, I need to try and be more 'carefull-er' after hearing these stories. I sure don't want anything to do with a stent thingy.
I'm amazed at all the folks with stone stories. I guess I'll go get some more water.

Patrick, IF you are ever LUCKY enough to obtain one of these things  Roll Eyes  you will be more than amazed at what happens. I've had several people say: "it can't be that bad"! Ya, OK, Let  me stab you with a knife just below your rib cage on either side in the back and then twist it every couple of minutes or so. Good stuff!

Sent this as a PM to HOOTER but wanted to share here too just to help anyone else that suffers these:
I read your post about Kidney stones...had them twice myself..Happened to do some HVAC work at a health food store at the time and the owner had suffered thru them herself..she had done research on them and gave me an article that a Dr. had written on how to prevent/remove them.  "Black Cherry Concentrate"...get it at GNC , it is a thick syryp-like stuff that I mix about 4 tablespoons in an 8 ounce glass twice a day if I ever feel that stabbing pain in my back/groin/abdomen. Takes care of it every time... It's been proven that the acid in a Black Cherry is the only thing that will get thru to your kidneys to attack the stones..excess water ot cranberry juice just makes you pee alot..the Black Cherry concentrate disolves the stones...make sure you get the CONCENTRATE , just blacke cherry juice is too weak..I know she wasn't just trying to make a sale because she sent me to GNC and not her own store..I was goin to post this as a reply but I wanted to make certain you read it because they are not fun to have.

Did you read reply #7 ?
I didn't have a stent, maybe it would have made things a bit easier. I don't know and don't want to know.
I've always heard that the cherry juice is also good for the gout.

4 years ago just about now. I had one the size of a jelly bean. By the time I got to the ER it was stuck and I had a raging UTI and a blood infection.
The Doc said 20 hours till room tempreture had I stayed home.
Stent, laser, OWWWEEE. I was in agony for 6 weeks. Still went to work and driving a fork lift in rocky dirt when every little jar is magnified, is amazing. Boy, I'm alive.
Getting the stent out was medieval. Cute nurse squirted the stuff in and clamped him shut.
After it was all over the Doc asked if I wanted it as a souvenier.
I said, "No thank you. I'd rather have a drink".
Thats what I know I said.
All that came out was, "enngh.obbbdss, ngngngehhff".
I felt amazingly better as we were checking out 20 minutes later.
BTW, The doc said Iced Tea is a contributor. We make Sun Tea here.
Salt too. He started the lecture when I refered to salt as "Health crystals".
Lotsa water, lotsa beer, lotsa coffie. Float that little bastard out.
