We're headed North from Decatur ga to upper Western Pa. So like to mix it up some slap to nice country roads. Any suggestions on cheap Hotels ( mom & pop types) along the way? Figure maybe three days to cover like 750 miles. So we're not in hurry unless the weather turns to crap.

BRP and Skyline are good suggestions, I took both on the way to the Gettysburg ride... "The Lee Highway" runs up 81, I liked the bits of it I have travelled, especially when I could look over and see the heavy traffic on 81 ... have to hit burgs and towns and stuff. 81 runs through "The Valley of Virginia", so some routes near 81 but not on it must be nice rides... -Mike

Whatever it is, it's better in the wind.
On a road less traveled.

The only issue with Skyline Drive is it will cost you $10 unless you have a park pass, heavily patrolled by Park Rangers also so watch your speed, speed limit is 35. Route 11 (Lee HWY) as Mike suggested is also an option, but it is a bit drab, fairly straight, but if you like looking at a lot of old towns worth it. I 81 is your fastest way through but in all honesty "IT SUUUUCKS"

I too would recommend the BRP and maybe Skyline. There is a web site to check for road closures which have been a problem over the years. I don't know if the roads have been fixed but there was a time recently when it seemed there were more miles of detours than actual BRP. We have found some great little places to stay and eat along the way but I can't remember the names. I recommend Wheels thru Time museum in Maggie Valley at the south end [ say hey to Dale] and Gettysburg at the north end.

I just qualified for this in March. And I continue to forget to ask about senior (and veteran) discounts everywhere. The proverbial one time good deal. https://store.usgs.gov/pass/senior.htmlAmerica the Beautiful - National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass - Senior Pass $10 This is a lifetime pass for U.S. citizens and permanent residents age 62 and over. The pass provides access to, and use of, federal recreation sites that charge an Entrance or Standard Amenity Fee. The pass admits the pass holder and passengers in a private non-commercial vehicle at per-vehicle fee areas and pass holder + 3 adults, not to exceed 4 adults, at per-person fee areas. Children under 16 are admitted free. The Senior Pass provides a 50% discount on some Expanded Amenity Fees charged for facilities and services such as camping, swimming, boat launch, and specialized interpretive services. In some areas where Expanded Amenity Fees are charged, only the pass holder will be given the 50% price reduction. The pass is non-transferable and generally does not cover or reduce special recreation permit fees or fees charged by concessionaires. The Senior Pass can be obtained in person at the park or by mail. If you take the BRP, a little prep about available gas is a good idea. Very few stations are visible from the BRP, and when you get low, you may get off an exit that is 40 miles to a station, or just around the bend. Go here and copy/print. http://www.blueridgeparkway.org/v.php?pg=50One way to approach a BRP trip (where time is not of the essence) is to be guided by weather. Take the BRP until/unless weather gets bad, then get off and go over to I-81 and boogie. A look at a map shows several places where BRP and I-81 are not far apart. I would not worry about motels, they are plentiful. I always avoid motel stops in or near any big cities/urban areas, if it is getting dark, motor 20 miles out of town, then find a place. Get a room on the ground floor around back (quiet) where you can park right outside your window. A small half cover comes in handy for lookey-loos and rain on the electrics overnight. I've used the Days Inn in Waynesboro VA many times (end of BRP North, beginning of Skyline Drive North.... just a couple miles away, and close to I-81 over in Staunton VA too) https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Blue+Ridge+Parkway+-+North+Entrance,+Blue+Ridge+Parkway,+Afton,+VA/Days+Inn+Waynesboro,+Rosser+Avenue,+Waynesboro,+VA/@38.0461424,-78.9351236,13z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x89b364a301520f87:0xce59d0240894a50a!2m2!1d-78.85738!2d38.030028!1m5!1m1!1s0x89b3615b7c079a69:0xf3435aae41d9a9f5!2m2!1d-78.938119!2d38.061722

That's a really good routing. If pressed for time, take I-79 north through WV. Lot's of turns and elevation changes, with little traffic. Almost as fun as Rt. 219 through WV. Allan

I had not seen that. The annual I've been getting every year is up from $30 to $40 too. Next time I go, I'm getting the lifetime old man pass.

Interstate? Interstate! WE DONE NEED NO STEENKIN INTERSTATE.!!! Ride to Brevard, NC and get on the BRP. Unless you have the time to ride to Cherokee, NC and get on the very beginning of the BRP. Ride it all the way to the northern terminus. http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm

+1 Unless time & distance is of absolute importance or necessity avoid the big road as much as possible ... even in the rain.

Get off of the BRP at 16, ride the good parts of 16 up towards Burkes Garden, then take 61 down to The Narrows and pick up 219 for the rest of the trip... -Mike
