So, I ride over to the Sonic for our bike night.  I was the only one that showed up.  So, I chatted with JoevalkIS in the chat room for a bit on my phone (too much work!). So I went for a ride.  I'm still not used to the quiet pipes, going from Cobra's to OE.  However, right at sunset, on our cuviest road in town, great music on the MP3 (and I could hear it so much better!!) I just zoomed through the windey roads, it was very smoothing.

I think I will be very happy with these new pipes

I had Pythons and Python IIs, and Vance & Hines Pro-pipes and duals, and Bubs, and Cobras.... and then I got a stock pipe Valkyrie IS with music, and I never wanted noisy pipes again.

My other IS came with the piggies cut (only) and that is enough to be my bad boy noisy bike.   Grin

that is the reason to justify a 2nd Valk.  One say being a stock piped I/S and the other the loudest, baddest sounding tourer/standard around waking up the neighborhood.

Sometimes I go out early in the morning and drive down to the ocean on A1A. I love the fact that I can go through the neighborhoods without making to much noise and then hear the ocean driving on A1A. I like to look and see what people have done to their houses and so going slowly without to much noise and the cool fresh air just is great. But even if I just want to scoot along I can without disturbing everyone.

I attended the weekly bike get together (every Monday evening at 6:00 PM) in Frankfort, KY last night.   Needless to say, I was on the only Valkyrie present.   Surprised I didn't see a GW or two but, regardless of that.   I was one of the few there that didn't have loud pipes on.   I guess it's a tradition to crank up the V twins and see how much noise they can make when leaving.   Kind of like making a statement of, "Hey, I'm leaving!".

Anyway, some of the bikes were deafening as they roared by.    I honestly like a rumble but, obnoxiously loud doesn't do it for me.    I understand the reasons for racing bikes, cars and such for modified exhausts but none of these bike were modified for such a purpose.   I'm also not a believer that loud pipes saves lives, though I will admit they do piss off a lot of people.    I've already lost almost half of my upper hearing range from being in extremely loud situations/environments without proper hearing protection.   I won't willingly lose the rest of my hearing.    When I ride with others that have loud pipes, I'm either way behind or move up front.    Hearing loss is not something you're aware of until it's too late.

Glad you enjoyed your ride! I went from Two Brother Headers on my '97 Standard to unmolested stock.
Much more enjoyable ride, The troopers don't even notice me and my neighbors wave to me again

Wish I could ride, all it does is rain here. I too have gone back to stock pipes and taken the 6s off. My other 2 bikes are noisy enough if I want noise. Now this is a quiet "smooth" ride. Just right for the long hauls!

Chris

Coincidentally this thread surfaced.

I recently joined the stock pipes set on my 2001. Previously it had truck stacks and a Ragnar cut. While I like the look and the sound at idle and low rpms, when I took it cruising at 70 mph it was too loud and droning for my tastes..
Luckily I had a set of stock pipes off my 2003 with triple tips and that's how she's running now. For my needs, much more enjoyable.
The older  I get, the more quiet and comfort become important Besides, the triple tips look "spiffy" IMHO.

I have gotten on the wrong side of many for pushing stock or nearly stock pipes.  I guess that some are noting loud pipes are irritating to themselves and others., simple as that.   Also a constant drone will kill your hearing.   I, too, have a hearing problem, not brought on by loud pipes, and my hearing aids don't take the place of my lost hearing.

The only two wheel motorized vehicle where I had a straight pipe was on my Whizzer. I used a megaphone for a short while and then went back to the standard muffler.  That sucker was loud and I learned at an early age that it wasn't for me, even though I thought it increased the 2 1/2 horses, Grin

Its really interesting what this thread has revealed.  I think its a factor of age (and miles)

We used to have a bunch of "younger" new Valkyrie riders that just had to have louder pipes even if it meant drilling holes in the stockers.  Mine came with the 6X6 but I already knew about them and knew that's what I wanted.

Now we have a bunch of "older" seasoned Valkyrie riders that are discovering the quiet smoothness of our Ladies.  While at the same time we have a bunch of new "younger" riders that seem to be seeking louder pipes.  (two wanted ads in the classifieds for Cobras right now)

So, these young pups bolting up Cobras or whatever right now have 10 years or so and they will be looking for unmolested OEM pipes.   Grin

Pretty good longevity for a bike that has not been produced in 12 years.

My 18 year old bike with 146K runs just as good as my 16 year old model with 100,00 less miles on it that runs like new.  Think about that, an 18 year old bike that looks and runs like new.....

Now mine really is running like new, with a low mileage set of perfect OEM pipes and Im loving it.  Glad I was bored after bike night and posted this little thought...

I guess its the circle of life and of deafness

Jeff, you may be jumping to some unwarranted conclusions.  A thread is generally occupied by a subset of members who either generally agree with the in thread posts or strongly disagree with the original.  The tone of the thread usually indicates which subset but hardly any thread can be counted upon to represent the group as a whole.

I'm 64 and a half.  I assume I'm not in the younger portion of our community.  I have a Standard with Two Brother's 6X6 pipes and an Interstate with cut piggies but otherwise left alone.  My wife rides with baffled Cobras.  I love them all.  I do wish at times for a bit more tone and volume from the Istate.  I have no real need for listening to "tunes" when I ride.  I've no real use for the plastic sail which is the primary causer of droning.

We're a varied group.  That's good.  I'm happy for those who have found the sound they like.  I'm not sure getting older is going to take us all to the same place.

We don't have many of those.  You must've been on Old Antioch.

You're so scientific Carl.  I expected more ribbing, instead  I found more going quiet.  Just a simple observation... Could be wrong...we all know you are different, doesn't skew, my reasoning all that much

I remember when I first bought my bike and was amazed at just how quiet the thing is/was.

I could go tooling around town and even at highway speeds in awe at how I could hear birds chirping and all kinds of sounds of nature around me.....all while riding a motorcycle.  Just didn't seem right to me that a motorcycle was THAT quiet.

I had to make it louder (as a lot of new Valk owners want to do).  I made it way too loud and had to reverse the damage I'd done.

I already knew that I had tinnitus and was slowly losing my hearing, but after making the exhaust louder, it really did a number on my hearing.

It's not stock quiet now, but has a nice rumble to it.  I like it now....it's a happy medium, not too quiet, not too loud.
