I’m working at an interesting site, building a pole barn for horses.  The land it’s on was part of the “Long View Farm” in North Brookfield, Ma that has a world-renowned recording studio.  It was built in the very big old barn of the farm, in the mid 70’s, by Gil Markle who was a professor at Clark University.

Many a-list artists recorded there, including Stevie Wonder, J.Geils Band, Aerosmith, Arlo Guthrie and even John Belushi.

But the most popular story of the farm was the 6 weeks the Rolling Stones used the farm as a practice and kick off site in 1981, before their “Tatoo You” tour and what that circus did to the small farming town located about 45 min north west of Worcester, Ma.

The barn from the road.

Gil Markle wrote a great book about his experience with the band, including running the studio before, during and a little of the after, of the trip.  It’s a cool story.

It’s here.      http://www.studiowner.com/

If your a "Stones" fan, you'll dig it.

One day last week, we were working and listening to the radio and the song "Centerfold" by J.Geils came on.

I said to the kid working with me, "I bet that song was recorded across the street"

When I got home, I looked it up and sure enough, recorded at "Long View Studio"

Hey Rob, thanks for the compliment on the barn.

Been getting a little wind time on the good days, luckily the rain days have been spread out.  Been kinda warm where your at?

I'm not much of a "stones" fan either, I'm not that much into music at all anymore, but it is interesting to me because of the history of the site I'm building on.

I've found that above around 108°, you're cooler if you're not moving.

Love the barn, and its an interesting little bit of information. I had been up in Greenfield and Springfield and had no idea that a major recording studio was in  North Brookfield, Ma.

Great post and story. I'm a Stones fan from Mass and did not know this story.

I think I did hear that they had prepped there at one time.

Another artist that recorded more than one album there was Pat Metheny, the famous jazz guitarist.

If you like to read.. put these 2 books back to back.

First read Exile on Main Street, but Robert Greenfield
Then Read STP the story of the Exile on Main St tour. written also by Greenfield, but 35 or so years ago.
