The local super market has a bakery dept. and packages some of their goods by either number of items or by weight, depending on what it is. My wife likes to pick up some cookies to have available both for herself and for my great-grandson when they stop by. Yesterday, while following her through the store....she with her walker and me pushing the cart, those cookies started looking real tasty. So I finally opened the package and took out a couple. No big deal....right? Going through the checkout lane the young gal running the register commented "these cookies have been opened." Brilliant deduction on her part! I told her I had eaten a couple while shopping. Her next comment is what got me shaking my head; "wait a minute, I'll have to change the price since two are now missing." HUH....NO, just charge what the tag says. "I can't do that sir, there isn't a dozen cookies in the package any more." I started to explain and got pinched by "you know who" so I just dropped it. I don't see that gal moving into managerial training any time soon. Unbelievable!

Box of rocks. So if I go back and eat a half package of six items, you'll only charge me half price for them?

Just kidding.
I wonder if that gal was of voting age, if so, its scary.

Once in a while, we'll grab a coke out of the coolers conviently located by the checkout stands. I've on occasion drank almost the whole bottle while shopping but show the checkout gal the near enpty and then pay for it. I wonder what your gal would do in that situation?

I sometimes do the same thing... when it gets to the opened Gatorade, I ask the girl... "how much for a half bottle of Gatorade" Usually she's just smart enough to give me a laugh and charge full price.

So if you drink three beers from a six pack, does that mean she'll only charge you for half a six pack?

She probably wouldn't know how to get a price for 3 of 6.

Maybe its a problem with honesty? Maybe she could not comprehend someone telling the truth about taking the cookies and really wasn't listening to you. I have seen people walk down the isles and take all sorts of stuff eat it and walk out. ???

Lucky the manager didn't see it he would have charged you with theft Technically he hadn't yet left the premises with the merchandise.

It's called grazing.
It's unlawful if you do not intend to pay. They may have you on camera, and give you a chance to pay at the checkout. If you leave the front door without paying, they have a pretty airtight case (that is where they generally make their move). The crime of larceny is complete with 1) an intent to steal and 2) any movement of the merchandise, even inside the store. But nearly all merchants with security wait for you to leave the front door so the DA will take the case seriously and prosecute.
Just another version of shoplifting (if you don't pay).

Well, we go there at least once a week and often twice. They know us there and recognize us with the walker and me on the cart. In fact, now that I think about it I have actually stood and chatted with the store manager while munching on a donut while holding the bag. It never occurs to me to walk out, that time I just shoved the empty donut bag in front of her and she laughed and teased me that I couldn't wait. It was an experience this time that I won't soon forget. What are they teaching these kids now, some can't even think for themselves it seems.

Your right John they can't think for themselves and when they do it has Zero Logic. And that is where we are headed they powers at be don't want anyone to be able to think they want kool aid drinkers. Schools don't teach much anymore they show them what to say and do.

Grazing happens all the time. But shoplift prevention mostly tries to catch the bigger fish. There are some pretty sophisticated schemes out there trying to take what they can.
