Some years ago, when I had the other Miata, I had a lady friend who rode with me in the Miata down to the Covered Bridge Ride.
That ride was very popular and 'Doc' Morse did his best to make it so. As we were driving down I was telling Millie that the VRCC wasn't a typical 'biker' group but was composed of great riders, both guys and gals. Millie was concerned about safety. I told her that no one drank and then rode. The bikes, i said, were parked and THEN the group got together for imbibing and kicking tires.
She was impressed.!
That same evening, Millie and i were sitting outside the motel room enjoying the tire kicking and the overall great family type gathering. Guys were riding up and down, many were parked, and a good time was happening. And then right in front of us, a rider, and his girlfriend, stopped his Valk and both, as I recall, while on the bike, popped the tab on a brew and commenced to get outside of it.
Millie asked me the question. I felt like a FOOL!
I had learned that Doc and a few others, had told this rider that he could not ride in the group when he was drinking.
Millie and I had the usual Scotch and enjoyed walking around talking to others but that event has stuck in my mind all of this time. Not a big deal, I guess, but it was for me. I cannot understand why someone would do this .Riding sober safely should take all of your experience and alertness. Riding while drinking is a head shaker for me.
