For those of you who haven't already done the upgrade, I have, and had no problem with the install. Just the usual operator issues . First thing I did was download a free word processor, that also installed a bunch of other free stuff, like malware and popups. So I had to re-install (restore) the software, but, no problems with that either. VERY fast and The new Edge browser is not bad.

Been waiting to hear about this here.  Had some FB friiends that had significant issues and were/are not happy.

How do you compare it to 8.1?  Totally unhappy with that version, and now Windows pretty much overall.

i have read that with version 10 microsoft has broad access to your personal data (see the 45 page privacy document) all of which you are automatically opted in to.  per the article I read, there are ways to 'opt out' of some of the data collecting.

If I recall correctly, on my one laptop which had Vista and when Win7 cam out, they sent me a email for free upgrade to 7. But I dragged my A$$ on it and when I decided to take the offer, the offer was gone.

Now from what I am reading in these threads here, I get the impression of the opt out is up to the user. And if they don't opt out and info. get passed on, it is the users fault.  Another words, with 10, they globally capture every ones info, and is up to you to release your hostaged info. Just reading between the lines, am I wrong. Hope I am!!

The only thing I saw in the privacy agreement was that they could collect info from the windows 10 program. They are giving away the main program, but , no frills. you have to buy a lot of the stuff that came with the old programs. When I upgraded, it automatically integrated the stuff I had in 8.1 after asking if I wanted to. I still have the old explorer 10 program I can use if I want, and it was handy, as the new browser did not work. The next day, there was an update that fixed it and so far I haven't found any other glitches. I'm not sure if I like it better, but, it sure is faster, and uses less resources Than the 8.1. We'll have to see how it goes.

PAVALKER: I can't really say anything bad about 8.1 as I liked the program, and had no problems. I am really poor with programs, and if they don't work right off the bat, I can't do much about it. The new 10 program is so different, it is  hard for me to compare them. but, I can say that I like the new and it's a fast learn for me so far

10 has some bugs, my power management went south with it, computer will not go to sleep when  set to, if I manually set it to sleep, will not come back on correctly, have to power it down and restart. Supposedly an update is in the works that corrects it.

When I play music or look at a video the sound gets distorted at times, as if the cpu is not fast enough and has to catch up.
Anybody else has that issue?

It is NOT connected to the internet and I have a real joystick hooked up so I can play chuck yeagers air combat if I feel so inclined.  It doesnt sit on my desk   OH and it has those small floppy disks so I can look up a file from 1997 if I want to do so and upload to the new computer using the usb floppy drive

You may have to upgrade OSS eventually, we all might have to one year down the road against our will.

My IT tech neighbor just got done installing on 3 PC's he has windows 10 and had NO issues whatsoever, but he does it for a living and he said is free for now, but am sure sooner or later will not be free anymore.

I started the update last night, then went to bed. Woke up this morning to Windows 10.  No problems here, very easy. I see all the best of Windows 7 and the best of Windows 8 integrated and improved into Windows 10. All I disliked from Windows 8 is gone. I see this as a huge improvement. The only thing I did other than download it was to turn on "Do not Track" in browser settings.
As far as data collecting, if you have a computer or a smartphone this is nothing new. Be wise with your choices online.

Hehehe, I've got no problem with that. I'm running Windows 7 on my machines and have no interest in going to 10 for a while... After how awful 8 was gotta sit it out and wait for most of the nastiness to get squeezed out first.

And I've even got a few NT4, Windows 98 and Windows 2000 VM's I keep on my VMWare farm for special use cases myself...

I"m going to try it on one of my laptops first.  If it works after 2 months, will try it on one desktop.  I have both Windows 7 Pro (5 computers) and Windows 8.1 Pro (1 computer) and all are working well.  Unfortunately, have to run Virtual XP for an older program I just haven't taken the time to rewrite in a modern database.

Not true.  You get a version of Windows 10 consistent with your version of Windows 7.

Ditto, I agree. No learning curve, no issues. Very simple and smooth transition. I was leery to do this but glad I did.

In the latest set of notifications, Microsoft claims to match versions. If you have 7 Pro you get10 Pro, at least I received Pro on the one system I allowed to be updated. Touch pad malfunction, no sound card drivers and other small glitches are now preventing me from alllowing the rest of the network to be changed. Too bad because on the older laptop I used as a test machine, 10 opened faster and generally seems to behave very well.

I went back to Windows 7.  Probably not enough RAM to handle W 10 even though their check said my lap top was compatible with it.

I did the beta testing and have upgraded some time back - you still need to install the classic shell so you get a proper start menu. The W10 menu only show apps not programs.
Speedwise it's a bit better than W8 and can slide by on less memory.
Edge browser is junk so I use IE and Chrome.

This is the last version of windows meaning all upgrade now show up as patches and windows updates. Home users will not have the option to bow out of updates but pro users can.
I am not sure I want to have major OS upgrades just dumped on me so I only install the pro versions.

To me W8.1 was just the new Vista and the Most Mac like OS MS has released and W10 is the fix for both of these things. Probably the worst part of the new OS releases are they are more difficult to manage as everything takes 5 clicks to change.

So, did more research.  I wasn't so wrong after all.  They are doing like-for-like upgrades, but because I had Windows 7 Home Premium, I still got Windows 10 Home.  As reported in another post, if you had Windows 7 Pro (more of a business level implementation) you get an appropriate version of Windows 10.  You need Windows 8 Pro (or 8.1 Pro) to get above Windows 10 Home.

The "missing" features and programs in Windows 10 can be had for free by downloading Windows Essentials at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/essentials

Either because I had Windows 7 Premium or because I had previously added them,  I already have the "missing" Windows Essentials.

Follow the instructions in WilliamRS' post of the article at Slate.com and the privacy concerns are mitigated.  I took the additional steps of turning off automated access to camera and microphone.

I read through all these posts about Microsoft and Windows 10. Well ...

The version match is correct. The current version "flavor" is what you get as long as that version is available on the new platform. Some confusion with the Window 8.x platform is that for what ever reason, the Windows 8.x distribution was as coordinated as buckshot fired in the air. Some distros had v8.0, v8.1, v8.1 Standard, v8. This created a nightmare for many developers who wrote code with certain platforms in mind. IMHO the resulting obfuscation of version platform is causing people to believe they are not getting the same version post upgrade (This also applied to Windows 7.x above Pro).

As for "free" upgrade, Microsoft is attempting to even the playing field. The free upgrade is only for Genuine Activated versions and new machines need to purchase the OS (OEM or Separately). The retirement of Windows XP is still having bad fallout but then again, we drive with unleaded gas, Air Conditioning, Power Windows and locks, remote key less, etc. Planned Obsolescence is a lesson learned from Harley Davidson. It is even studied in most Business courses.

Last but not least ... there is always Linux.

A security patch update is causing problems with some computers: http://www.komando.com/happening-now/320268/windows-10-update-is-crashing-computers/2  This appears to be a limited number of computers with Nvidia graphics drivers.  (I've got Nvidia drivers and have not experienced this problem.)

I'll repeat that I'm very pleased with my upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium to Window 10.  We just updated my wife's Lenovo "convertible" laptop from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and it is a positive experience too.

Reports have been pretty good so far, but I'll wait four or five months before upgrading.  There are usually bugs to be worked out, fixes to be issued, compatibility problems with other software, etc.  It does look promising though.
