Fla. Gov. Rick Scott,  and the future Gov, Pam Bondi are in trouble for violating the Florida  Sunshine Act.  ((Legislators must not discuss business in private).  They were just about to have to answer questions in court, but decided to settle with the group who brought the charges.  400K ,plus the expenses of their defense.  And where better to get the money,  than from we taxpayers.   Story in Miami Herald  and Orlando Sentinel.    I love paying billionaires bills!!!

sorry but that law makes no sense to me

It means I cant have my legislator friends to my BBQ
and talk about work either present or pending ?

We are not talking about money changing hands, just civil discourse over a beer and Q!

That is the most stupid thing I have ever heard from Florida, land of people who cant see over the wheel turning the opposite way of their directional signals

Can you imagine if Reagan could not speak with O'Neal over beers and chips

or Adams could not drink wine with Jefferson and talk about the french wanting to sell Louisiana

Stoooopid law  No wonder the country is in crap

Oss, I have to respectfully disagree . That law was enacted in many states because of politicians and lobbyists getting together and conducting business in secret. Which made it rife with corruption. Granted corruption is still going to occur but I doubt any of us wants more of it.

When our three member Board of Works and Safety sit in as visitors to the council meetings, we have to declare it a Board meeting. If only one Board member attends, then it isn't a quorum and not necessary.

The only time that we can declare an 'executive' meeting, NOT open to the public, is only for the purpose of discussing employee discipline or lawsuits.

We are careful, but the state sessions are not.

I understand the reasoning Meathead and no offense taken of course

But I still think its dumb and impedes civil discourse among those sworn to uphold the fed and state constitutions

Now a legislator meeting with a (registered) Lobbyist is different than a legislator meeting with a legislator isnt it and the same with a politician meeting with any constituent

Seems like infringement of my 1st amendment to me no matter how its worded

I am not an expert on this law (or any law). But I don't think it pertains to legislators meeting with constituents . I think the spirit of these laws is to keep the Freedom of Information Laws effective. Kind of like how Hillary Clinton avoided them by using her own server. By legislators meeting privately it gives the opportunity for corruption to flourish. In my opinion the more sunshine the better.  cooldude

I this Sunshine Law had existed in 1776, we may not have obtained our freedom from England.  It's been said that Ben Franklin did a lot of "negotiating" in French parlors and bedrooms to obtain the help of France...

When I go to Tallahassee and meet with Senator Dean and Rep.  Smith about motorcycle bills, or have Nancy Argerziano, at the time, head of the Florida Public Service Commission over for BBQ, it is not a violation of the Sunshine e law.   Have you read the news paper accounts of this story?  If you enjoy a good read, search Pam Bondi, our Attorney General,  and see some of the shizit she's been up to.  BTW she WILL be our next Governor,  and Rick Scott Will be our next US Senator!  You heard it here first!

How can the governor of any state ever talk about anything outside of a meeting open to the public?

ie, the governor is walking down the state office building corridor, the sec of state's office is down the hall.  The sec of state comes out, they meet.  So, they cannot mention anything that might be considered "official"?  What might that be?

The weather?  Heck, in ND, we have Weather Modification is western ND to try to suppress hail.  It is state and local funded.  They could NOT even discuss the weather!

How is it possible to NOT discuss something political?

Apply it Nationally.  You then would have the President of the US that could NOT TALK to ANY of his appointees, or legislators, in private?  He does that many times EVERY DAY!  How can they conduct business WITHOUT talking in private?

The way I understand the law is there is nothing stopping the people from talking to each other but any records of the meetings such as notes, email, text, etc. are available to the public.  So the effect is if the governor is walking down the hall and his cabinet member comes by and they discuss business, any email, notes, etc. from that are to be available to the public .

The bigger issue here is,  the Governor took public funds to pay the settlement and not his own money!  The voters here passed amendment one, which uses tax money.  For environmental projects.  That's from where he took the money to pay the fine WTF!!!
