Jamming devices used by the public are not legal any where. Law enforcement, I have no idea. Currently, 2.4ghz is the most common frequency. 5.8 is used, but it has issues with range and obstacle penetration. The higher the frequency, the worse range and penetration for a given power has been my understanding. My quadcopter is controlled at 2.4ghz FHSS, while the real-time video transmitter is 5.8ghz. I have as many safeguards in my quad as I can put on it to keep me from losing it and to keep the public safe. I used to run an r/c 1/5 scale dune buggy and I was insane about safety (25 pounds, 45 mph, you get the idea why). I have never seen the other ghz bands in use in this country for RC, though. I know the amateur radio bands are becoming popular due to their much longer range, and 72mhz was the original rc air band, but it's not in use much any more. The biggest issue with these new multirotors is that they are too easy to fly. Now, I think a lot of people will grow bored of them, and only the true hobbyists will be left. At that point, this crap with flying near real aircraft and whatnot will probably end.

Do you have a Phantom 2 or 3, they work that way, you do have the return to home feature, incase of lost connection to your radio.

Right now I have a Phantom 1.1. I have retired it. I am now building a Reptile 500 (dead cat frame). Running a Naza Lite with GPS and return to home failsafe. Radio system is a Futaba 10J transmitter with telemetry enabled receiver. I also have a beacon on it so I can find it in the event of a flyaway. It activates 30 minutes after pulling a pin if the pin is not reinstalled (after a flight).

Are you saying your Phantom is controlled at 5.8Ghz rather than 2.4Ghz? I have and Phantom v.1 and a flamewheel F-450 I built, I used the NAZA v.2 and use a Spektrum DX8, I was adding the PC Ground Station to it, but things came up and not finished it. A nice feature that the 2 and 3 has is you use your Iphone or Smart phone and use a GPS software that tracks the exact location if the drone in case of failure, battery or mechanical.

No, my Phantom 1.1 is 2.4 ghz. They even have special warnings about wifi enabled cameras being used on it. I saw a video where a professional photographer with a pretty expensive camera was flying over water with his camera's wifi on. Yeah, the Phantom dropped like a rock into the water never to be found again. I found the video. He was an arrogant SOB, ignored the signs of impending failure If I was his insurance company I would up his rates for sure, just for being an idiot. http://gizmodo.com/this-poor-guys-loses-1430-worth-of-camera-and-drone-in-1480711934

They tell you not to use the GoPro WiFi, because it can interfere with the Quad. I use 5.8Ghz transmitters for FPV and have the telemetry on the 450. One thing I noticed when those quads go high you can't see them. I have to watch, I live a couple miles from Selfridge AFB, copters, and fighter fly over all the time.

We actually do own the air up to 500 feet above our homes, OK, please correct me if I'm wrong or misinformed but, I thought I read that RCs and Drones were supposed to be limited to 400 ft. agl? If, that's the case, then an operator would seem to be only legally able to fly one above his own or public property where such flight was allowed. Or am I full of crap on this.

I was told legal height is 400ft, I have seen videos of people gone almost 2000ft., don't think it was in the US.

OK, then if that's true and I own the air up to 500 feet agl, then you couldn't legally fly over my property without trespassing or, breaking the above 400 foot agl rule? And, that is a question.

Your probably right, But from my experience, maybe it was just the day light, but when I went that high, I couldn't see the quad when I looked up, got a little nervous.

I can understand that. All I'm gonna say is if, someone decides to fly one over my back yard, I'll do my best to bring it down and then find out who owns it. No, I won't run or hide from the police. Castle doctrine says I can protect myself and my property and for all I know, it is a dangerous weapon.

First of all I hope you don't live in the city, where I live you discharge a weapon in the city you committed a felony and you are toast, so you loose you guns anyway. Here is a pic. over my house, so you can get some perspective. That hotel is about 8 or 9 floors, there are people and cars in this view, you see them. If you can't, how do you expect to see something about 1/10 the size of a man. Another thing, I don't know how fast my quad will go, I know it is quick, I read somewhere that one was clocked at 80.

While I could be wrong, I'm pretty sure we both know that I'm talking about invading private space and drones/quad copters with cameras and recording or transmitting pictures or video that could not be seen unless actually in my yard. That, is an invasion of my privacy. As I said in my first post, I am not for any kind of ban on these invasive toys but, I do hold the operators responsible for what they do.

Maybe you have a reason to be paranoid, I don't know. But what gets me is people getting all excided of a toy drone that is none existent over your property. But yet most have the internet, IPhone, SmartPhones, Tablets, OnStar, Sync and I can keep going, and have everyone nearly crawling up you a$$ and you don't even think twice about it. But some guy down the street has a quad and you bring out the big guns, what is the logic to that, and what makes you think they are targeting you.

IF, that quad is in my back yard, who do you think it was spying on? I'm also not excited, I don't want them banned but, I do hold operators responsible for what they do with those quads. But, to your point about other tech stuff, I do what I can. My new IPhone has a locator device/app. I switched it off.

You don't really think that switch off means anything. Here a few month back, there was a problem of people switching on smart phone cameras and smart TV and computer cameras with no indicator light on and people not knowing it was active. I don't know what happened it sort of all disappeared. I have been told if you have OnStar or Sync in you vehicles even though you don't have a subscription, they can turn on, and monitor you without you knowing, I don't know. Wireless is some crazy stuff, and you can do some wild things with it. So I think quad is the least of you problems far as privacy is concerned. Like I said look at the pic and look for the people in it, even the cars.

As I said, I do what I can. I don't fool myself into thinking I can outwit those with all the tech stuff. But, my back yard is not a place they or it is welcome. Like I said look at the pic and look for the people in it, even the cars.
Yep, at that elevation and with that camera, it looks very appropriate. But, we're not talking about everyone with quads taking those kind of pictures from those elevations now are we? There are some very good cameras out there with some very far reaching lens. Additionally, not everyone is taking those kind of photos. Why would anyone think they have a right to peep into my back yard anyway. I have an acquaintance that has one of these toys and he likes to fly it around the trailer park looking for what he can see. Told him that he should be glad I don't live in that trailer park, he'd be missing a toy. We don't talk about that any more. Again, why? It's not like I'm that good looking although, there are those who may think so.

Far as the cameras ability, most have them the range comes from the lenses. You can modify a GoPro lens, but it may cost you $400-$500 for the lens and install. Don't make sense when the lens cost more than the camera. I am with you far as that neighbor flying his quad around the trailer park, that is just wrong. Myself I wouldn't use a gun, I would use a bow with a fishing attachment that has a string attached to the arrow. or a sling method can work.

First off, not everybody that owns a drone is a Rerv.
Didn't mean to suggest that. Already stated that I would not support a ban but, I also stated that the guy that hovers around my back yard won't be getting his toy back. I'd imagine at some point there will be a market for hunter killer drones or anti drones.

This sounds like fun. Some what expensive but, I can see it now, Drone Wars, a reality show.

Super Drone Killer Drones Cheap RC airplane, 3 30' lines of 6lb test with small splitshots on the non plane end. 1 from starboard wing, one from port, one on centerline. Fly over, end of drone.

Dreamaker, You have made several comments on this thread about people being paranoid, and I think that your missing the point completely. People have the expectation of privacy in their home. (Which includes their property) A remotely controlled object that is hovering over ones property gathering any kind of data is by most peoples measure an invasion of said privacy. It's really no different than coming into someones yard and taking pictures. Just because one can do it without actually touching the property doesn't make the act any less benign. Regardless of the fact that you think someone "has something to hide" or not does not make the invasion of privacy any less real or justified. Are you really able defend someone hovering a camera platform over someones property without their permission? If there are RC operators that have that mindset they shouldn't be surprised when some homeowner takes them out with a shotgun.

How many drones have flown over your house, in fact how many members have had drones flown over property that was not their drone. Again the cams on armature drones are so wide angle, you couldn't get any detail, unless it was in your face which you wouldn't need a shot gun. They are designed for landscape not close ups. Go back the pic over my house and look for the people in it or even the cars. This reminds me of people always calling me to sell me insurance, for something unlikely to ever happen. Thing is they are trying to sell me fear of something, not the reality of something. To me privacy is everything, and I respect others privacy, but when you speak about shooting thing out of the air with a gun, about something that will probably never happen to you, yes I would call that slightly paranoid. Like I said before, you worry about something in the sky, but you don't concern yourself about the tracking of your lives. With credit cards, cell devices, wireless devices and automotive wireless devices, that is reality. Keep this in mind, not all people that ride motorcycles are bad people, and not all people that have drones also are bad people.

How many people here have a firearm in case of a home invasion? How many has it happened to? How many people have had others doing donuts in their lawn with a truck or ATV? How many people have had stuff stolen out of their garage? Because it doesnt happen to every one, that doesnt mean it never happens. Go to youtube and type in drone girl sunbathing or do a image search for drone sunbathing images. I have 2 daughters and a wife. I will drop your drone if is is anywhere near my family. How many times has a drone already been used to scope out a home for stuff or to see if anyone is home? I dont know, but I do know thay have already been used fro drug drops.

Let me ask! Let me answer....as you have made several assumptions about me that are incorrect. I have a neighbor with a drone that has in fact flown it over and hovered over the top of both my and another neighbors house multiple times. When I politely asked him to refrain from the activity he told me that I didn't own the space above my house and he could do as he pleases. That was when I reminded him that I would acknowledge his same sense of freedom to do as I wish to shoot it down if I saw it again. Your same assumptions about my privacy are equally incorrect and I am not paranoid, I am aware. Feel free to drive your drone around all you want, my only point is that I don't appreciate them hovering over my house.

Based on what you have said, I agree with you and feel you are within your right, Video it! contact you law enforcement, and let them know your right to privacy is been violated. Maybe try the FAA.gov also. But if people around me stupid enough to shoot gun, in the sky or anywhere, I will have their ass, what goes up must come down, you understand!

I agree with you on this, I think it is due to PC to create chaos. What do you have here on this thread. You have people that probably seen something on TV, or the net that want to feel stealthy like. What it amounts to is people, jacking up their blood pressure over an assumption, an incident that has never occurred, by people that has never done anything to them. Makes allot of sense, right. Funny thing is, there is a discussion a couple threads down, by GIG about Flo, that could very well be happening as we speak, and many people haven't even given a second thought. But people rather be more concerned about something that never happened them.

Most of us have a very reasonable concern for invasion of our privacy these days.... on many fronts.
What would make me very concerned would be when someone comes up with a simple half gallon of incendiary devise to be dropped on my house, or something. Gas, soap flakes and an impact igniter. Would obviously be a bit more precise than a hand thrown Molotov cocktail.
Still, for the most part, they seem like fun. It seems the arguments for and against are somewhat parallel to firearms... it's not the machine, its the human user.

I agree with you on the most part, wasn't a good idea about the details. A rational person can't live in a fantasy world, that is what women do, got to work on reality of things. Don't make yourself crazy over something that will probably never happen. But you never know, maybe with all this discussion and attention maybe it just gave one of us an idea!!!!!! LOL Worry about texters rather than drones, and there will always be someone to screw things up. Like Beretta says, "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime"
