so today we moved our son off to college, University of Deleware...traffic was a mad house, had to park about a mile away and walk his stuff to his dorm, luckily I brought a hand truck and my daughters.

Mike (and 1 roommate) is in a new dorm for honors students...has a/c through out the bldg.,elevators, cable tv, high speed internet Wi-Fi, he is on a co-ed floor and get this,a quick count had the girl to boy ratio is about 4:1. Yes that's right about 4 girls to every boy and every one was cuter and prettier than the next. Hats off to UD. the campus is amazing and tonight is a big welcome party for the students. Oh, classes start Tuesday. Tough life, I'm jealous.

thanks for the heads up on the hand cart since I'll be doing same thing probably this time next year.

We visited 2 colleges this summer liking them both and the one almost made me wish I was 18 all over again just by glancing at all the young ladies on the tour.  YIKES!

that's funny  Smiley  haven't thought of it in that way.  he had a great grades in HS, graduated as Valedictorian (of 400+ students) w/ a 103.8 GPA taking AP and Honors classes all through his 4 yrs. I'll give him a little latitude his 1st semester, but to honor his scholarships, he needs to maintain a 3.6GPA.

I hope he has a blast and I know when it comes to school, well all he ever did was excel, especially in math, science, English and US History. His major now is Biomedical Engineering.

I was an RA in the dorms for 3 years.  I worked my way through school, and free room and board (for RAs) was a good deal.  I have a thousand stories; funny, serious, angry and crazy.  Coed dorms for the most part brought brother-sister relationships more than lovers.  I lived in coed and all men and preferred the later simply because there was far less drama, and believe me, we had way more of the desirable women (looks and personality) in our all men's dorms, than lived in the coed dorms.

Honors dorm is a good idea; in my day people went to school to avoid RVN, then majored in basket weaving, beer/weed, music and girl chasing.  It's hard to get any study or sleep with those people around.

At $40-70K a year today, you'd think there'd be more serious students these days..... you'd think.

My standard opening speech to my new floor each year was..... front load and organize all your school work.  Stay ahead of the curve, develop good study habits, do all your school work first, start papers early, stay away from fraternities, and choose friends wisely.  If you stay ahead of your work, you can still have all the fun in the world and graduate with honors.  A few listened.

I don't think they have panty raids anymore.

It will take you about a week to get used to the empty room, then you will start thinking about redecorating it.

Speaking from the front of the classroom, (I teach Accounting at Miami University) Jess is absolutely right.  The first 30 days is the toughest.  He will need to get started right and make sure to complete the follow through swing.  College is still a lot of fun, but some of the kids seem to forget the main reason they are here and concentrate on the social activities.  The fraternities are good and bad.  The ones the focus only on social activities will create a block in the educational function but some of the more serious ones are great for both social and education.

He sounds like a very bright young man.  cooldude I'm sure he will do great. I'm sure you guys are very proud of him. Those 4/1 odds do sound pretty inviting though.  Evil

I as in a co-ed dorm for a couple semesters.
Thought it would be cool having girls across the hall and next door, but the reality is - it sucks.
You can't really just hang out like guys do - with chicks around all the time.
Gotta watch out before you scratch your balls because the girls on the floor start cackling...  Angry
I thought co-ed by floor would be a better arrangement...  coolsmiley

The 2 UW system colleges we visited this summer do have dorms (very small rooms indeed)  but the floors are all girls on one floor,  all boys on the next floor.  I'm thinking that is the norm, but not really sure.
Having girls and vice versa living right next door might not be a good arrangement, or it could be TOO good if you catch my drift.   Cool

Best thing I got out of my college was the wife!  cooldude

I loved college! Best time ever. Played my favorite sport on a ride and played with a few other things to. Did I say I loved college?

Our early coed dorms were alternating floors.  That was good (and close) enough.  Someone once said familiarity breeds contempt.

Visited the more progressive U of MI dorms several times and they had coed alternating rooms on the same floors, and communal bathrooms.  You have to take a leak, and a gal is coming out of a stall.  That was unsatisfactory.

Growing up in a one bathroom house, even family did not share the bathroom  (well mom and dad did on occasion getting ready to go out to dinner).

Progressive..... blegh!!

The girls' dorm was about 1/4 mile of open ground from the boys' dorm, but nothin' was gonna deter us from making the forced march in the middle of February and evading detection by the gestapo "dorm mothers" from our missions for cooch.  It made us into men; undeterred horn dogs: adapt and overcome.

Once build a ramp of packed snow in the middle of the night in order to reach the second floor balcony and the "stairway to heaven." cooldude

Brought the daughter down to Washington DC for her LAST year!  Finally!  She's been off-campus for a year already.  Gets more expensive when they're out of the dorms (food, furniture, utilities).

And yes, I also noticed the high ratio of girls to boys, Ooooooooooops not allowed to use gender identifiers any longer.  I just remembered that!

This thread should be locked immediately because in more than one post someone used a gender identifier.   uglystupid2   2funny   angel

Congrats on a great choice of schools.  My daughter just graduated from UDEL last year.  We were living in North Jersey then.  What a great campus.   Your son should be fine as long as he stays away from Main Street party scene.  Great internships with Dupont if he is an Engineering major.  Good Luck
