A bad map and a long ride in Northern New Mexico!

Jacksboro, TX

WWW
« on: August 29, 2015, 06:30:30 PM »

We left out this morning from Jacksboro, Tx about 7:30.  Made it to Trinidad Colorado.  Not a stellar day, but we did a little over 500 miles.    No real problems,  I had the well known vent hose kink on the tank...bike died once after a hard pull against wind and incline.  I knew that I had forgot to check it after I put the tank back on in the dark the other nite.    Average 33 mph at 70 to 75.  Only got drenched once.     No pics... but will post what I take when I get home.   Didn't bring surface or laptop.  Vowed to limit technology this trip..   just my droid!   Tomorrow we decide where we are going... Yellowstone or just stay in Colorado.   We are leaning towards staying in Colorado and relaxing.      More later!

Take highway 12 north out of Trinidad to La Veta. It's called " The Highway of Legends" and it's a great ride. I'm north of you in Pueblo if you need anything.

Thanks!  I have ridden that highway before, but always from the other direction.  Couldn't remember the number!

We took hi way 12 out of Trinidad,  thanks Joshcornkid for the reminder.  Headed to Southfork, then came across Slumgullion,  thru Lake City to Gunnison.  Great ride.. dodged rain all afternoon.  Suited  up and drove around it all.    Few pics, too busy riding.   Tomorrow we will probably go north towards Leadville.

Having fun.   Bike was cranking out around 45 mpg today.  More later.

Had a good ride up to Leadville.  Rain pending...stopped for lunch and headed north.  Made it to Frisco and my riding buddy called it for rain.  I think I70 and rain bothered him.  We are holed up in a hotel.  Sun is now coming out.  More later.  My holdout on technology didn't last.  I bought a nextbook at target out of desparation.  Disposable tech?

Need one of these. http://www.windycreek.com/weatherrock.html

Road to the summit of Mt. Evans is OPEN! You are 2 hours away!
Was closed when I was out there earlier. But it is open now. Highest paved road in the country.
Make sure you have a weather rock just to be safe.

Wish I'd known you were coming through Gunnison, you could have helped me diagnose my engine chirp!   2funny   Seriously, that's a favorite ride of mine.  The beetle kill up above Creede is awful this year.  We went the opposite direction in late July, I couldn't believe the massive piles of clear cut beetle kill timber.  At least they're clearing it out before it becomes tinder for a major forest fire!

We may check out Mt. Evans.  But we are allergic to I70, and probably are heading back west toward Ouray.   I definitely need a weather rock.  I knew it was going to be wet, but we hoped for the best.

Valkorado, sorry we missed you.  Not sure if we will stay there again, but we did enjoy it.

My riding buddy (brother in law) is adding oil to his Ultra.  I am not saying anything...but dang.  And his rear brakes are needing help.  Apparently the checklist from the Harley shop that says checked rear pads means nothing...

I spoke with a German native today, who admired the old Valk... last comment was that is the best bike in the lot.   He was riding a gs1200.
