                                    Are the Good Days Passed?

I just read where drugs and alcohol are becoming a major problem on the Appalachian Trail.  There are a few overnight accommodations that are closing because of it.  I've never hiked the Trail but I sure see good reasons to do so.  It is probably the ultimate in being close to nature...........Up to now.

Increasing problems with drugs, alcohol, littering and a “I don't give a s*** attitude, are changing the intention and use of this fantastic idea.

To me, it's sorta like the Dragon.  What normally is a challenge for riders with experience seem to be a challenge or a 'brag list' for those who can't ride as well. I've never rode the Dragon so I have no experience, just going by the word that's out there.  The increase in population with the resultant results of inexperience, dumbness, and a lack of responsibility, seems to be more prevalent these days.

As an old geezer, I seem to be constantly reminded of the 'good ole days.  I don't talk much about the good ole days as it get people riled up.  However, I'm reminded of my very first hunting years.

In 1946 I first bow hunted deer in Allegan Michigan. In 1947 I started bow hunting in  lower Michigan, around the Grayling, Lewiston area. At that time there were just a handful of us, we knew each other and had lots of discussions over coffee after the hunt.  Straight and recurve self bows were the norm then, along with wood arrows and turkey feathers.  It was illegal to hunt from an elevated platform of any kind including a natural one.  Because of the lack of hunters, hunting was a solitary affair with a minimum of tools to take a deer.  Good Days!   So much for the good ole days.

Just sorta spoutin' off.  No need to make something political out of this,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,   .Oh yes, I would come back from hunting and spend a few last days in the Fall riding my Matchless thumper.  Now it's motorcycle related.

I understand exactly what you are saying. We had an old saying, "Life is simple, people "F" it up" Truly the fun things are the simple things. Back when, on Fri. I use to pack up the '78 Wing, after work just would head north Mich.,  when it start getting dark, I would look for camp ground, some times slept in a ditch, so I wouldn't get busted for Vagrancy. Planed nothing always an adventure, I loved going into the woods, parking my butt next to a tree and sit there quietly for hours, with tears rolling down my cheek in gratefulness for the experences.

Later rented a wood cabin on a lake and listened as the acorns would hit the roof and roll down.
Nothing better than inside a tent listening to the rain hit the canvas.

Wayne, I am with you. People not giving a s*#+ can not be politicized. I just don't know where folks being civil and having common sense has gone. I will give you a prime example. I am retired 3 yrs and have picked up a sweet part time job 3 hrs and 3 nights a week picking up trash and emptying trash cans at two major chain grocery stores. Would you believe folks will change their kids diaper in their car and not walk 3 feet to a trash can, just throw it down in the parking lot. I will tell you this and leave folks to their own conclusion.  The one in the area where homes are 60K- 150 is the trash pit and baby diaper drop. The other is surrounded by 250K-600. Sometimes you would think the store had not been open that day the lot is so clean. Not complaining about the  trash pit, job security. I don't think all civility will ever be gone, but it sure has diminished. What will it be like when the baby diaper violators are the old geezers ? Guy pulled in the parking lot of the 24hr store on a  early model CL 450 Honda that he had transformed into a nice one of a kind cafe racer. Now mine is motorcycle related.  Wink

Yes Wayne, the good old days were indeed good ones. I also recall bow hunting deer with a cousin, never got anything but still had a great time. I remember a trip or two on the bike, had a bedroll and stuff on the back, and often would look for a picnic table. I could overlay a tarp and sleep under it if it started raining. Otherwise I'd sleep on top. Woke up one night to some noise and found a possum sleeping on the bike seat. Left him there until dawn. Today, I don't think the local constabulary would allow anyone to do many of the things done as kids or young men. But for me, as a kid back in the 40's the strength of our imagination was the only thing that restricted us. It was a great time.  cooldude

Got good memories of growing up in the 50s an 60s. When I moved out of my parents house it was in a 1964 1/2 new Mustang on my way to the SanFernando Valley of Ca. from the Boston area. Best thing I ever did. I was going to get me a Valley girl and did. Still got Her.

Speaking of cell phones,  people abuse them at work WAY, WAY too much and think it is social hour or two or three while at work.  1-2 abusing it for hours per night spoil it for the rest of it who when get a call,  we cannot answer it at work which is B.S.   I get 1-2 phone calls per month while at work and normally important I WILL answer it regardless of the no cell phone use policy while on company time.  If they don't like it, fire me, I do NOT abuse it like the 4-5 other co-workers who use it while working for social media crap.

I agree,  times were simpler then and cleaner as well, even if I grew up in teh 70's and 80's, still better than today.

If my Dad was younger the last few years of his life, he would've tried whooping the teenagers in shape since he told in his late 60's, early 70's at the time,  for the trashy high school kids to pick up their pop cans and other trash bags they toss in his yard living right across from the school while he was sitting outside doing it right in front of him.  That takes some balls to do since if younger,  most would go pick the trash up and toss it down their baggy, low riding pants these kids wear nowadays needing a belt or smaller pants.   I would've if still lived at home and saw it or they best be able to outrun me which most probably could.

We have visitors here in the summer with $ 200k boats that leave their trash in the parking lot. I don't think it has so much to do with your position in society as it does with your character.  Smiley

Since I don't want to bad mouth this age completely,  I note that Pokagon State Park in NE Indiana has no trash barrels, they tell you to take your trash out.  Either we have nicer people coming to this park or a very efficient park service as I see almost nill littering here.  Not bothered by yellow jackets either, no pop cans.

I can't say the same for the more popular Brown County State Park in southern Indiana. I've seen more than one teenager there throw their big gulp paper cups on the ground.

Don't know why the difference, maybe  because Pokagon is not as popular? (popularity is a scourge)

Thinking about it, back in the days we were taught discipline, honor, courtesy, and the most important respect. It didn’t matter if some people were super butt heads, you didn’t disrespect them, or you answered to Dad.  Newer generation became lazy, and the children of today are the result of it. Naturally the parents wanted better things and ways than they had it for their children.  What the problem was, what was special to us, was just norm to them and was not  anything appreciated by them. (M, Me, You Owe Me, Sound familiar)  One time my Mother took me shopping for school clothes, I said “Mom. I don’t want these jeans, I want Levies and the tennis shoes I wanted Red Ball Jets”  Mom said “ Honey you can have anything you want, when you get a job and buy can it yourself” That is exactly what I did.  Another issues to cause the problems of today is, parents used TV’s Video Games and Video Movies for baby sitters, rather that disciplining and connecting with the children. And very important thing today, people have such low self esteem today. That is why they walk around looking like a freak show and demand respect. Doing dangerous things, outrageously flashy, selfies and starving for attention and so on. There is much more!!

Yup as a kid in Deep East Texas, I owned the woods, me, my dog, and my trusty 22 spent many hours hunting tree rats, and would never see another person out there.  Was a great time and I prided myself on head shots only.  Those things cooked up great and was a wonderful supplement to the poor folks grocery supply.  Now the woods are full of people that wander around clueless.  A few years ago I was in my tree stand before first light, and just after sunup along came Joe Nimrod making all kinds of noise and sat down at the foot of my tree.  Didn't have a clue, I amused myself watching him for about 30 minutes just to see if he would notice, he finally got up and wandered away still clueless.  I will always treasure those old days.

We, who know how things were, have something to compare our present times to and miss things about them. But the kids who never had to go through what we went through or have that database don't know any better. Later in life they will be saying the same things to their friends. To the kids its like our times were to us.

As for drugs, I knew so many that had a problem with drinking in the older set. People would come home to a martini and some to a whole bottle. That was the drug of choice in the days past but Drugs today are so prevalent and easy and the young don't have the same values we did so for them to get involved in it, it looks pretty good.

I had a guy working for me and watched him do things that just bewildered me. I had to pay him daily just so he had a few dollars in his pocket to buy food. Good kid, kind of felt like a father to him got him into the Faith Farm but he didn't go. When his brother died of drug overdose he started to realize that its not a game and hopefully will shake this. I have seen so many burned out from drugs and alcohol its just sad.

I know a lot of kids today that are great kids, we hear about the trouble makers but that is still not the norm. They do look for something that works in this world of crumbling values and broken marriages and self absorbed stars.

Yup I miss certain things about the innocence of the time but all in all I welcome some of the changes. I can remember party lines, plumbing that was ok, car engines and cars that were tanks, we didn't have videos or cell phones. I got one of the first cell phones when they came out it was almost 3k and didn't work to well. AC and heating wasn't what it is today we can go down the lists so yes I wish people were more adherent to the old values but I like my modern conveniences. We have witnessed so much from the start of TV to the first flight to the moon with less computing power than a cell phone of today. What an awesome time to be alive and see the changes. Does anyone remember when an outboard motor of 40 hp was top of the line? Now 350 hp is available in an outboard.

People would have died from some of the diseases they have been able to cure today we see miracles in surgery and in life saving procedures. People with functioning prosthetic limbs being able to live normal lives. So many new drugs that help the young and old alike to live when they would normally die.

So yes there are problems and some are the same ones with different names and different circumstances but virtually the same problem. If you want to have an education start to read some old news clips you will laugh. I thank God for my life this time and all the things I have been allowed to experience and change for the better in my own life. The only thing constant is change cooldude

One final thought in 97 they made the Valkyrie if we go back any further than that we would not have our beloved bikes so I am grateful for that change. Did it bring a problem YES how to get out and ride more and how to afford a 2014 Valkyrie. Cheesy Cheesy Grin

HB, you and I are the only people I ever heard of that NEVER had a cell phone.   cooldude

Not only for certain work/business, but people with kids probably need them.  I had none.

My ex was adamant that I get one.... I told her it was nothing more than a leash, and I don't wear a leash.  You can ring my desk at work (before I retired), you can get me at home, you can email me..... or guess what, you can't get me.   Grin  I'm also a cheapskate, and viewed them as a waste of money (monthly bills suck).

Riding bikes all over creation has made me realize that having an emergency (cheapo) flip phone in the saddlebag might be a prudent idea.  Another good reason to ride Hondas.  But I've made it to 62 without one, and never been sorry.

Never had a bluetooth, blackberry, strawberry, MP3, Ipod, CB, blueray, facebook, twitter, pager, ebay, paypal, etc either, and my growth was never stunted.

Finally, when every person on earth has one, if you need to, you can use theirs (after they dial it for you).  Grin

I have a simple Tracphone. I guess you could say that I rent it. 20 bucks every 90 days.  Emergency just in case thing. Nothing fancy. I've accumulated 1800 minutes 'cause I don't use it, Doesn't text and no one knows the number. It's only on when I call someone.  Unfortunately, or fortunately it does have a camera.

Conversations by cell phone and texting must be very important  Smiley nowadays.

Well, at least, no more pay phones! Hahahahaha.

How about no more house phones Grin I cut the cable awhile ago but I was surprised at myself having a hard time doing it. I just didn't want to give it up all those years of conditioning trying to get a phone it was hard to go against programming to turn it off. I would have kept it for 20 a month but the phone was 10 and taxes were another 10 so cut it. I am so happy those pay phones are gone, picked a few up and someone had put all kinds of stuff on the ear piece and mouth piece. YUK

My wife has the exact same thing, a just in case phone, nobody knows the number eihter except for my daughter and she knows that it is mostly useless to try to call to it. I'll admit that sometimes when I'm going on a ride a couple of hours away, she will ask me to put it in my pocket, I do it for her on occasion, but I never remember that I have it with me...

I bought my Motorola RAZR 3  in 2002 or 2003 when I got my VAlk, for emergencies only. I take it in the car, mainly take it on the bicycle or the motorcycle in case. Still works, and it has no GPS in it and is prepaid. Other than that its off.

I spoke too soon. Turned on the cell today, it was dead. Replacement battery already,  fully charged yesterday, now dead.  Paid extra to get one not made in China. It was still made in China. Lasted long enough to get past the warranty.

What ever happened to, two soup cans and a string, and you remember these crystal radio kits you could buy on the back of a comic books. I bought one, it worked!  I remember Superman! Around that time I remember the kid across the street, well his parents bought him a Superman T-shirt that cam in the mail. Now understand, in those days front porches where about 36" high or so. And now this kid put on the shirt, ran out the front door and leaped off the porch like Superman. Good thing we had lawns, we thought he killed himself, not close, but he was hurting and sore, no damage. The good old days.

Thanks, DM. I can't unsee that now.....

Back in the day, I recall going out on a warm summers night, cricket chirping and lying on the grass looing at the sky, at the milky way. Now a days you barely see any starts in the city.

Sorry, I didn't mean for anyone to be hung up on that picture. It may be a very silly thing, I don't know, but Grandma always said to me. If you get a tattoo, you sell your soul to the devil, don't know!  But I do always keep in mind about the point of no return, things that cant be reversed, Also I was taught to respect your body, OK. Look at Steven Hawking, tremendous mind but no body  So here I am, tattooless, no holes, the only ones I was born with. Put a thousand stiches in my body, through the course of my life, that's it. Sorry about the pic., but you got to wonder what is going on in their heads, is that repercussion of having a cell phone glued to their heads all day. Sad!

I've seen that picture before. My first thought was. how does he make a living? At some point, we all have to go out and make our way. Where does he live and how does he pay for it? At what point in his life will he truly be honest with himself, and realize he seriously screwed up his life? That damage can not be repaired. What will he look like in 10 years and beyond? He's young, lots of mirrors between now and then....

I search around, trying to learn about people and understand them. That is nothing, I have seen women like that, with sleeve and upper body tats. Some have  tats that are in good taste and have somewhat logic or theme. Other have tats of senseless babble like impulsive all over, kind of like someone scribbling on a note pad. Don't appear to have any logic to it. The only thing I can figure these people just don't like themselves and starve for attention and recognition for there existence. I feel sad for them.

Back to the thread, what good memory do you have, from back when, that you recall when things were simple for you.
