WHEN HOT IS TOO HOT TO RIDE

Wife and I went through Helen Ga a couple of weeks ago, It just happened that their annual bike fest was going on that Saturday.
It took us about 45 minutes to make it through a stretch of 3 miles and it was HOT, I was glad we were in the cage with A/C.

We walked along the stores and I saw this Wing with shade on it and decided to take pics to share with you all.

I know a lot of us have been wimping out because of the extreme heat we have been having but would you go for something like this?

Is that a real thing or redneck genius? Doesnt seem safe to ride with, looks like it could catch with spin back, crack the mrs on the head and act as a wind brake.

  I didn't even notice it in the first picture, actually pretty cool.
Is that just for shade while parked or can you actually ride with it?

I waited for about half hour hoping to talk to the owner but he never showed up.
It looked like it could be ridden with it, my first impression from far was that it could have been rigged up with some ingenuity but as I got closer I could see that it was sturdy and well made, almost like a kit you would buy from a manufacturer.

I've seen other bikes with a similar rig and were running right at 60mph. Don't think I'd want to be riding it in a strong cross wind.

Is that landing gear fitted below the saddlebags?

Many Wing riders fit a belly pan for protection and report it aids in crosswinds (crosswinds are problem reported on the newer Wings).  That cover must be a challenge on the road, especially in crosswinds or passing big rigs.  I'll just wait for cooler weather.

Landing gear or not, it's not my cup of tea.  Aero principles and dynamics would preclude me from wanting to ride this thing at any speed over 10 mph. 

I get the benefits of a Bimini top and shade from the sun, but boats is where they belong since they go slower, are more stable, and weigh significantly more. On a motorcycle, not so much!!!

I suppose this would help in southern sun.  Don't think it would be a good idea in long high speed freeway rides, but it depends on the strength.

However, it is my experience that the sun is not always straight over head, and a decent amount of the day it would still be shining on you.  I suppose you could add curtains.  

I do remember riding around in a no-AC Vette (black interior) in SoCal, and most of the time it was cooler with the top up.  Esp in Palm Springs.  Course the engine heat was almost as bad as the sun.

I'm not a wimp just for the record, I just hate riding in the heat (bike = fun , HI of 105 + bike = no fun)

Pretty neat idea but I'm with Pete here, aero's must be a bitch with that thing. Jerry's pic on the other hand with the hard top...might as well buy a sports car.

Can abide by that.  Back in the day I had a '66 MGB.  Riding around with the top down wasn't too bad as long as you kept moving, but when you'd stop at a traffic light, the heat would radiate up from the asphalt and from the motor (engine...I read that thread  , and it would get unbearable real quick. 

But like you said, with the top up, it was pretty great actually.  The MBG had a zip out rear window that would make driving on very hot days pretty nice.

Sonny, how old are you?  Must be a youngun.

Get a few more years under your belt and your attitude will change.

Personally, I wouldn't ride either version unless it was a trike for more stability. And yes, the first pic does have training wheels on it but that won't help going down the road. They're only for slow riding like in a parking lot or dropping as you come to a stop light. Like the others, I'll wait until the heat index drops below 90 and ride with pleasure.
