All,

I just pulled plugs 6, 5, 4 and 3. My findings were that 5, 4 and 3 looked bone dry and the top portion of the threaded part of the plug had turned the color of bronze. These are brand new plugs just installed yesterday. Number 6 showed no signs of the discoloration at the top of the threaded portion however, the white section was not as clean as the other three and the black tip of the plug was wet. Additionally, my buddy actually ran out of fuel earlier and when he switched to reserve, that was empty as well. does this still sound like an issue with the pet-rooster?

Not having any fuel in reserve sounds like a petcock issue to me. The wet plug could be a faulty float valve in the carb or it's jetted too rich.

Sandy,

What would cause the " mist " coming from the exhaust when I throttle up from sitting idle? It only comes from the pipe in the plug 6 side?

What did you determine about the oil level?

I'm thinking that if there is a petcock and carb problem, you would have experienced hydro lock by now.

My buddy Gary never hydrolocked, and he was shooting raw gas from his pipes...

A petcock problem that runs gas down to #6 in the vacuum line doesn't
have any relation to the floats...

Hubcap,

Your buddy Gary, was the gas coming through the exhaust on both sides of the engine or just the number 6 side?

Hubcapsc is dead on.

I'd say you're fuel on one cylinder is way, way off and you're probably running on five.

It had to only be the one side... his problem really did have everything to do with the petcock and number
six. The flap in the petcock was bad and the PO tried to fix the leak by blocking the weep hole
with a condom. That made the inside of the petcock fill up with gas and it flowed down
the vacuum line. Check your petcock, feel of it all over... is there a little bit of gas seeping out
of the weep hole, or does it even smell like gas?

I just checked the oil dip stick and then ran next door to the neighbors for a second opinion and we both agreed...the oil dipstick has a strong gas smell.

I guess there's no easy way to pull the peacock without removing the tank eh?

Seems like he did say the problem was coming from the 'drivers side'.

I had this happen once, the diaphragm shown in Hupcup's photo was porous and leaking gas down the vacuum line to #6 cylinder flooding it out in that cylinder only,  that gas is still under pressure, so when the exhaust valve opens that fuel gets sprayed into your exhaust pipe and out...

As far as pulling the tank and working on the petcock, I recommend getting a service manual and follow the instructions in there, it's really not a big deal, but do it wrong and you'll find yourself alongside the road...or find another Valk owner, he'll know....

the gas smell in the oil, the gas could be leaking down cylinder walls into the crankcase, it would seem to me if the gas was leaking into the cylinder and not leaking out, you would have hydro locked after enough gas had built up...I'd do the petcock first, change the oil and fire it back up, if I still had a gas smell in crankcase that would tell me I have different problem as well....get the manual, it will be the best investment you made in awhile... cooldude
