Mark, Twila, and Chris just flew back into Indy from the Florida vacation.  The used the airport shuttle to go to the hotel where their car was parked. ............... Someone stole the catalytic converter from the car.  It's undriveable.   Mark is waiting on the cops and insurance but will probably have to rent a car to drive back to New Haven and then go back to Indy to pick up Twila's car when it's fixed.

They probably left it at the hotel rather than take a chance on long term parking at the airport.  It didn't work.   So much for security!

Cat theft is a big thing, profitable.  Don't know what kind of vehicle they had but someone probably needed that specific cat. Cats are disappearing in huge numbers around here from the dealerships. Battery powered recip saws are a wonderful thing, makes quick work of it.

If I have it right, it's what's inside the cat that is the valuable part.

Platinum inside. Certain ones have more than others, range from $20 to $120 at scrap yards.

Yes and the scrap yards are now starting to get in trouble with the law in scrapping those cats. I think its more money than that for a cat also. A muffler shop can weld in a pipe if you need just to get to where your going or even put in an aftermarket cat.

A lot of cars won't run right without the cat, throwing codes etc. Some have sensors attached, ala wife's Subaru. Replacement cat was $600 plus labor. Also cracking down on muffler shops for screwing with the cats or removal.

Mark just told me that the dumb bastards took the resonator instead of the cat.  It was still undriveable as the computer could be confused even though the O2 sensors were not affected.

Interesting, a few years back I turned in a scrap cat from my other Miata.  I had to go to three different guys at the scrap yard showing each one my id and that I was the owner of the cat. I got $65,00 for it,.

Back in the late 70s I was in a seedy truck stop in Los Angeles Ca. Guy asked me if I knew where he could get a starter for a Cat diesel. Said not really. Bout an hour later I'm in the restaurant having coffee i over hear a conversation some guys truck won't start and I ask-is it a Cat? To which he responds in the affirmative.  Roll Eyes I told him to go out and see if the starter was there. 10 mins later he's back wanting too know HOW I knew his starter was missing.  tickedoff Thieves DO NOT care who they inconvenience or if they put lives in danger. I sincerely hope they catch the low life sumbitches who ROBBED Mark and Twila. Exhaust system theft there is what? A wrist slap at best?  uglystupid2 NOT making light of the theft but the law these days have other priorities.  crazy2 RIDE SAFE.

Up here in Motown, the thugs find an old workvan. Cut an access hole in the floor in the back.
Pull up to the target car, thug drops a creeper out the access hole, hops on and rolls under the target car with his battery powered recip saw. Grabs the converter and is back in the van in less time than it took me to type this.
