After giving this some thought we need a VRCC specific movie rating system.

I propose

WOT- Wide open throttle. - Best Movie. Go see it. Go see it NOW!
3/4 T - 3/4 Throttle - Great Movie. See it soon
1/2 t - 1/2 Throttle - Good Movie. Basic chick flick. See it some time.
1/4 T - 1/4 Throttle - Wait for the video. Not much to see.
Idle - Idle - Not worth seeing. Don't even wait for the video.
Hydrolock - Total crap
Synthetic - Bad Remake
Darkside - Horror/ Cult

Under this system the "Martian" movie would score a WOT on the VRCC Movie Index.

Never heard of it.  I haven't been to the movie theaters since when my kids were younger going to the drive in outdoor (in car) movie theatre that is still around my area double features for like 8 bucks per person.  First movie is usually a kid's movie, 2nd one rated R for the adults since the kids under 10 are usually asleep by the time the 2nd movie starts around 11 p.m. ending by 1 p.m. in the morning.  NO wonder the drive in movie theatres are only open Friday and Saturday night starting first movie around 8 p.m. or a tad after that.

I think the last indoor movie I saw was  with my boy around age 10 at the time with Tom Cruise in Valkyrie where he was a German soldier trying to kill Hitler which was guessing 5 or more years ago?  There, now it is 'Valkyrie' related I guess?

I hear the matinee times in afternoon or late morning are not bad priced though as long as you don't buy popcorn/pop/ or other snacks that are way overpriced.  If you do buy popcorn, make sure you can get free refills for the price paid for sure.

What is the Martian movie all about, never heard of it??

Yup, GREAT movie!  4.7 of 5 stars for me

My wife and I are movie geeks, we see a lot, especially in the winter.  This one will be up for a few Oscar nominations  no doubt: cinematography, script, directing, lead actor, and best picture.

Kind of like "Castaway", but stranded on Mars instead.  All the space geek people will pick it apart with technical errors I'm sure, but it is a very well told story from start to finish.

We saw it today too, was a great movie.  My wife commented that I must have liked it since I stayed awake thru the entire movie.  What do they expect, reserved seating, big leather recliner that's perhaps more comfartable than mine at home.  The one at home has a manual lever on the side, theirs are push button electric.

I remember one theater like that.... but all of the movies at that place had John Holmes starring in them.

I guess that was why all the regulars wore raincoats all the time.   Grin

Lessee, the last movie that I saw in a movie house was "Open Range" and that was only because my lady friend at the time had free tickets.  The movie before that was "Tora, Tora, Tora'

I'm spoiled since, as a kid, I could see two movies, Movietone News, a serial, and two cartoons for 10 cents.  Pop corn and milk duds were a nickle.

To really date myself, I've watched Buster Keaton in "The General" twice   (On Netflix, tho, give me a break Grin).

BTW, a local restored Movie house in Ft. Wayne shows silents like "The General" complete with theater organ background.  Both the theater called the "Embassy" and the 42 rank Paige theater organ are fully restored, and both were built in 1928, my birth year.

Sorry, I digressed.  Wink

I don't go to movie theaters anymore.

Overpriced, over populated, too much talking, and some people think it's a good place to shoot up.  I also do not like funding the Hollywood machine, which is generally in favor of everything I'm against.

Most everything ends up on cable, sooner or later.

I do enjoy good movies (in my own lazy boy, in my jammie pants   Grin).

It WILL be on D V D just before or just after Christmas. Then I'll go rent it. Generally some useless sumbitch in the theater after the movie has started turns on his cell phone or tablet which about 15 mins into the movie now looks like a landing light on an airplane!  uglystupid2 When people go to a frikkin movie why in the hell can't they shut the hell up AND leave the cell phone alone for how ever long the movie is?  tickedoff I can rent the thing and eat at the house way cheaper than going to the theater. PLUS I can pause it when I needs to take a whizz AND the ONLY noise I have is from my surround sound system!  coolsmiley Wayne-Dad dropped my brother and I off at the theater on a Saturday with 50 cents-3 movies couple cartoons and Movie Tone News!  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

I caught it Sunday. I thought it was pretty good and will probably get it on Blue-ray when it comes out for a keeper.

Still

The book was better. It's not a hard read. If you haven't read it I highly recommend it, even if you've seen the movie.

Well, we're gonna digress this a bit further! Tora! Tora! Tora! I got to watch that movie being made when I was a kid in Hawaii. The Jap Zeros flying in formation over our house every morning with a helicopter flying behind. From out back of our place and up at the top of the hill we could see Pearl Harbor. (We could see part of Hickam Airfield and the international airport from the front.) We'd go up the hill and watched them make a run on the Harbor a couple of times. Real interesting to watch them. Had to look it up. Came out in 1970 so I'd been probably 9 or 10 at the time.

We don't go and see very many movies at the theater.  Once in awhile there is a movie I just can't wait to see. Star Wars this Dec 18 ( my birthday ) will be one of them.  cooldude  I saw Avatar at IMAX more than once. Roll Eyes Now I have it on Blue Ray 3D. I have pretty high standards when it comes to theaters. Got a 82" 3D display, Thiel speakers ,subs all around me , while we sit in our own electric recliners with refrigerated cup holders.  Wink So I don't really feel the theater really gives me anything, especially when I can BUY the movie for less than we could have seen it.   The Martian is one, I've been tempted to go and see though.
They just opened a theater in Louisville with the leather recliners, may have to go check it out.

I intend to see The Martian also.  Glad you gave a good review.  I've liked all the movies,  so far, that I've seen Matt Damon in.  Of course, Good Will Hunting, Saving Private Ryan, The Bourne flix, even The Legend of Bagger Vance was alright.  He grew up in this area.  Although I don't know him... My wife's ex, (who I am friends with) knows him and his family.  I have golfed with my wife's ex, Tom Pittman, and Matt's uncle, Wayne Damon.  Nice enough fella and very funny.  Bottom line.. I will be seeing the Martian flic either at the movies or wait for the dvd.  Thx.

I would agree if by "True events" they mean someone once lived and they almost died while doing dangerous stuff.
