Can You Help a Marine?

I saw several people in the "How Do You Earn Your Living?" post are in aircraft maintenance.  I am posting this for a young man wanting to get into the business.

My business partner's son is a Marine with two tours in Iraq... lots of aircraft maintenance.  He's out now and looking for a job... wanted the fire department in Dallas but budget cuts have frozen hiring... would like to maybe work aircraft maintenance since he has a lot of experience.  A place in North Carolina has offered him a job that gets him his A&P and puts him to work.  Anyone familiar with the Boeing facility in San Antonio?  I believe it is the old air force base and if he could get a job there, he'd be a lot closer to home (Houston/Dallas).  Connections, pointers, ideas... all appreciated.

SE, I work for Boeing in Seattle but don't have any San Antonio connections. I believe they service T-48 trainers there but not sure.  I'l check around some tomorrow at work and see if I can get a connection or info for you.

They have quite a few things going, including the KC135 tanker and the 787.

I live in Southern NJ and talked to two riding buddies today one works for Boeing Helicopters and the other Falcon/Desault neither are hiring...

usajobs.gov    They are ALWAYS looking for aircraft electricians, aircraft anything...  the air force is looking to hire many  prior service avtecs at civilian pay.  most are wg- 8 which is about 15.00 an hour in north carolina I do believe.  Good luck and semper fi!

If he wants to stay in avation, he MUST get the A&P. I looked into it when I got out, and went a different route.

Before he makes that call I think there are web sites out there that predict job trends. He might want to look at where there will be jobs when he is done with the A&P. See if any of the major manufactures are getting big contracts, gubmint or private.

If he was avionics, the beauty of that is power to ground is the same in all applications. (except for GMC autos, they cant make pwr to gnd work) Telecom, medical, doesnt matter, its all a path to gnd, the trick is to make it go the way you want to.

If he was rotary wing, there are likely more jobs with private places like oil companys. Fixed wing would be corporate jets and those have been demonized so sales are down.

Airlines are tough right now.  The majors are expected to reduce capacity by at least 6%, which is huge.

You know, this might sound be-littleing, but, I had a friend that I worked with at the local airport for Northwest Airlink.  He went to school as an aircraft mechanic in Kansas and got a job as a bag handler here in Eau Claire.  He would fill in and offer to repair the aircraft when the pilots had problems that would ground the plane.  He was a certified aircraft mechanic, and had all the credentials to perform the job.  After saving the company many would be cancelled flights, they hired him on as a mechanic.  He quickly moved up and out to American Airlines in Tulsa Oklahoma. 

It's one of those starting from the bottom stories that's true!!
